I was wondering if you guys/gals can reccomend other subtle background ambient music in the vein of the Hummer.

Thanks

I really love ambient / minimal music :D
There is much more to this music, and much more artists, than one might think. Here is a short list of artists whom I have music from:

Waki
Very trippy and minimal. Quite repetitive, but oh so relaxing. You really should give it a try, as it is quite accesible. I managed to get some Waki albums from Japan, they are really hard to get...
Recommended: Music for Waki People

Klaus Schulze
What can I say. Just try it out. Very trippy, and more variation than Waki for example. I also think he uses some more (exotic) instruments. Or samples.
Recommended: Audentity, Beyond Recall

Lustmord
Quite a well known artist in the genre. He remixed Tool's Parabola for example. His music is dark and brooding. Almost no beats.
Recommended: Carbon/Core, Metavoid, Pigs of the Roman Empire (with The Melvins!!)

Coil
I won't even begin to describe their musical spectrum. They released tons of cd's, and colaborated with a lot of artists. Unfortunately, 50% of Coil's creative mind died with the unfortunate drunk-death-plunge of John Balance...
Some recommendations: Music to PLay in the Dark vol 1&2, Horse Rotorvator, and their last: The Ape of Naples

Raison D'etre
Spacy, dark, gloomy and throat-gripping. These guys have been around for some time and released quite a lot of albums.
Recommended: Metamorphyses, Enthralled by the wind of Lonelienes.

There are a lot more artists. Check out http://www.databloem.nl, where you can listen a lot of samples from various (unknown) artists.

Good hunting! :D

Yes, I love this kind of music too. There is so much out there. I'm not sure this is exactly the same feel as Devlab, but it is ambient/spacemusic/soundscape type stuff.

Steve Roach

Robert Rich - each album is a different style so you might have to search a bit.
Robert Rich - samples from his 7 hour DVD called 'Somnium'. He held these 'sleep concerts' where people would come and sleep while listening to him play.

Dwight Ashley

Max Corbacho

Jeff Pierce - guitar based

Internet Radio:
S0maFM - click on "Drone Zone" (and change the 0 in the url to an o. Why the fuck does the forum censor that word? And it doesn't censor fuck either. hm. The webmaster has a weird sense of humor?

Sleepbot Environmental Broadcast

StillStream

Ambient Music Radio

That should get you started. :P

Héhé nope, look at the topic "kramer's racist rampage, page 4, in free talk, for explanation^^, it's just that s0ma is a drug advertised in spam, and it looks like this censor filter is more oriented towards spammers than bad content, as it prevents you from posting as long as the word is wrong, rather than simply replace it with a nicer word (a**hole -> very nice guy).

OFF-topic OFF^^

I second Steve Roach, well on the afor(not)mentioned webradio, some ambient track caught my attention once in a while (it's quite rare compared to metal for instance, when a badass riff suddenly plays^^), and it often was some Steve Roach music.

At some point I also listened to Carbon Based Lifeforms - Hydroponic Garden quite a lot (but kind of lost interest in ambient music since :? ).

Fantomas "Delirium Cordia" is an excellent ambient/noise/metal album, if you have a bit of patience and a good set of headphones...

My top recommended if you like The Hummer is Final. Final is an ambient side project of Justin Broadrick of Jesu/Godflesh/Techno Animal fame. http://www.avalancheinc.co.uk/

Also recommended is Tribes of Neurot, which is an ambient side project of Neurosis. The coolest album would have to be Grace, because if you play it simultaneously with Times of Grace by Neurosis, the two combine into one awesome album. http://www.tribesofneurot.com/

House of Low Culture is also pretty good, an ambient project by some of the guys in Isis http://www.neurotrecordings.com/artists/holc/index.aspx

If you want to go Dark try Lab Report which is super-bassy and Dark, primarily made with an instrument invented by Mat Shultz called the Anti Tank Guitar. http://www.labreport.com/

James Plotkin also makes some great ambient music, though not everything he does is ambient.http://www.plotkinworks.com/

While it is not ambient Sunn O))) has quite a similar sound to some of The Hummer and Devlab, mainly in the Deep Deep Bass and swirling backgrounds. check it out in you like Drone. http://www.southern.net/southern/band/SUNNN/

Actually, I was going to mention it. This Aphex Twin album is an awful lot like The Hummer and I thought of it immediately when I first listened. If you like Hummer you should buy the Aphex Twin.

He described Aphex Twin as INSANE, which makes me think Info Dump, as opposed to The Hummer. Thoughts? The only Aphex Twin I've heard is what David Firth uses in his cartoons (fat-pie.com)

I could be mistaken, but I think what he meant by "INSANE" was that no one had yet recommended it. A.T. ambient music is so NOT insane. A.T. other songs can be pretty interesting too, and I only have three other albums, but I wouldn't call them "insane" either.
