Hey guys, here is something kinda cool that I noticed – it is the auditory equivalent of inter-textuality – but its all good because Devin wrote both songs!

Listen to ‘Bastard’ (track 11 on Ocean Machine) and pay particular attention to the singing from 3:19 – 3:28 when Dev sings ‘Bastard, mother, father, no’…

Then listen to ‘The Complex’ (track 7 on Physicist) and pay attention to the singing at the very beginning of the song: ‘falling, watching ships go down’.

It sounds that the latter is just a sped up version of the identical melody line and singing style…

Yes children, my innate predisposition to be fascinated with things that would otherwise drive other people insane has inevitably conquered me once again – I do have too much time on my hands occasionally ;)

I'd say it's purely coincidental. But also kinda cool... :)

Listening to the Ass-sorid demos and the Infinity demos, there are definately melodies and rhythms that the Dev likes to recycle in a way. Not to say he plays the same thing over and over, but there are similarities and you can tell that he took some vocal lines or guitar riffs from demo songs and fit them into later works.

"Detox" and "Victim" have similarities for sure. I would even say there is a riff pattern in the 2nd part of "Aftermath" has a little Detox vibe to it as well, if u see what i mean.

Yeah, they are sorta similar but I don't think it was intentional. This said, it's sorta cool having cross referencing like that between projects... It's very prog! Haha... While we're at it, did anyone notice that the chords in the bridge section of "Detox" are the same chords in the main riff of "Hide Nowhere"? They're just faster in HN while they're sat on for a while in "Detox"...

Chris, that's the perfect example of the pointless poll

They sound the same
YES
NO

I don't say that the subject of your thread is not interesting there was no need to create a poll to discuss about this.

You guys are missing the real similarity here:

"Nobody's Here" and "Things Beyond Things". They're practically the same song, which is probably why I don't like "Nobody's Here" as much as the rest of the album.

Furthermore, the solo in that song sounds very similar to the solo in "Planet Rain", only the "Planet Rain" solo is far better.

I know that Devin intentionally recycles some parts from old material, but I don't think that was the case here. For a perfect example of recycled melody, listen to "Ocean Machines", then listen to "All Hail the New Flesh". There is one part that is identical in both songs. THAT is no coincidence...

As for the two songs in the poll; I think you're really stretching that one, personally.

The guitar at the end of Slow Me Down crossfades really nicely into Depth Charge. Were they originally conceived in that order or is it just a really nice way to keep looping the whole album on repeat.

hmm, since we were on the topic, I thought I would just add that.

I believe that was completely intentional. I think it's cool that the album begins and ends with the same sound. It's something I didn't catch right away...

And yes, "Om" and "Regulators" do indeed share a riff. I guess it just fit, so he used it again...

I can't begin to tell you how homegeneous all of Dev's catalogue is. Everything is written in C Lydian, well, almost evrything. There are so many riffs that are repeated from song to song. I should make available one song I did an afternoon that was meant to sound exactly like a Dev SYL song. And it does! Except it's an instrumental:)
