I was pondering about the whole interview thing myself after Dev said he did 200+ interviews. If it was me I'd probably get sick to shit about answering the same questions hundreds of times, but I guess it's a rewarding process cos it gets his name further and further out there, which can only be beneficial. Especially with Ki being more... accessible? That might not be the right word. Ehm. It's easy to listen to, like. You don't have to be a metal-lover or an adorer of Dev's previous stuff to like it, based on my experience (My jazz-loving, rockabilly-worshipping employers thought it was really cool, and not just Trainfire!) So with that in mind I guess the interviews are a good idea, cos this album could attain a much wider audience than the previous stuff.

I think I fail at clarity. Oh well.

I've met him several times. He was usually high...because I read somewhere that the way to approach him was to say "Hey Dev, wanna smoke this joint?", so I did....even though I really didn't smoke weed. I just wanted to feel a bit closer to my idol. He was totally chill, and just seemed to wanna converse and relax. At one point he put on some weird japanese music (what the hell WAS that?) that was totally hypnotic hahaha.

Anyway, I guess my POV is pointless because his mood may have been chemically induced. Either way......he just seemed to wanna be left alone from the chaos, and just be around people who weren't too intrusive, hence: press?

It must be a bit hard to conduct interviews, you could have all this awesome material, but will it be welcomed by the press/media that are your boss? And even harder for the interviewee, trying not to step too far outside the lines, in an everyday conversation there aren't as many boundaries.

This guy is unbelievable....I usually don't want to hear what anyone on an acoustic has to say unless it is Al dimeola or something, but this guy is great!! Now, he sounds like the guy that must have down the soundtrack to August Rush.....am I right? Love it!

"Ocean Machine" was a fantastic record. Do you a plan an "Ocean Machine II" ?

How do you miss the point that badly?

Wow man. I never ever would have thought Ocean Machine was a sober record. It is so depressing (in a good way) and deep....hmm, well shit! Now I have to go listen to it again knowing this! So, with that in mind.....I wonder if OM and Ki are companions?

I guess this makes alot of sense though, because it seems to be his most timeless and honest record to date....well, besides Ki.

Dan

P.S.- I will shit my pants and send myself my soiled undies if he works with Steve again. Thats all.

Yeap, Ocean Machine is insane.

As for Justin King, try and get hold of Le Bleu and Fall/Rise. His best work to date. He had his own "band" but it was just like coldplay :| (*shudder*) with a bit of fancy guitar work here and there. Very talented and very nice guy. He plays shows around and doesn't seem to get much of press. Beyond me why he isn't bigger.

My only comment is that if dev does work with Steve, that its on even ground and that Vai does it tastefully. Ever since i saw G3: Live in Denver, I don't think I can take him seriously - especially when he was using a sustainer, in his pajamas and wind machine, and doing the o-face. LOL :D

Kinda missed the boat on this topic, as it died a few days ago, but I think the question of why people like heavy music is an interesting one. I like relaxing music as much as the next guy, but something will always bring me back to aggression in music.

For me, I don't think there's one reason that I like heavy music, it depends on my mood. Probably the main reason that I'm a big fan of aggression in music, whether that be from metal, classical, gabber, or power noise, is that it's a bit like an addiction in a way, I get addicted to the endorphin rush I get from listen to heavy music. When I'm in the right mood, listening to heavy music feels absolutely amazing to me, it's a total feeling of euphoria. I don't think I can explain why on any lower level than that. It's almost relaxing to me sometimes, an amazing feeling of just being high on life, feeling glad to be alive.

I've never touched drugs, other than alcohol or caffeine, I guess music has just filled that gap in my life, where other people might turn to drugs or religion. It's like something inside of me is always craving this music.

It's more than just heaviness that interests me though, it's complexity as well. I like music with a lot going on, either in the form of lots of different parts interacting, or rhythmic complexity as with bands like Meshuggah. I love that feeling of trying to take in everything that's going on in the music.

Also, heavy music is awesome to listen to when computer programming, it really helps when you're in "the zone" and you're just coding non-stop. Gets the brain working faster. I find the two go hand in hand, I often feel the need to listen to heavy music when I've been really productive, it's like the two things feed off of each other.

I dunno, maybe it's just because I'm generally quite a chilled out guy, and try to live and let live, but all that day to day bullshit that we all deal with has to go somewhere, right? Better to channel it into music, and chibbing random pedestrians in the face with a bus in Crackdown, than to take it out on other people.

I really want to know what "gabber" and "power noise" are! Sounds interesting...

I get that euphoric feeling all the time....especially when I listen to something like All Hail the New Flesh, or Truth or something. I am addicted to that "AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!" feeling. It really comes across in my own music as well, as if to say "Listen to me!! I am here!!" I have much mellow and ambient music in me though, and enjoy albums like Ki and The Division Bell. But, I am normally in the "heavy" mood more often, like you.

I also hear you on the chaotic and complex music thing. I like the challenge, and it keeps me on my toes as a producer and engineer, as well as a musician and listener. Sometimes though, my body and brain will shut me down against my will. Like today, I felt bad for not writing or recording, but there was no way my body and brain were gonna let me. I just wasn't in the mood...so I sunbathed and took a bike ride to meditate. I also haven't really listened to anything too heavy today. Those moods come when they need to I guess.

I want to "chib" someone! How do you do it?

I'm not an expert on those genres, but my understanding is that "gabber" is another term for hardcore techno
e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KQ4cYqa-As (really kicks in at about the 50 seconds mark :D) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yNx83n3 ... re=related

Power-noise is stuff like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DISrzMTwBAo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6NlWcPh ... L&index=80
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nq9ds0ve ... re=related

Obviously, both can be quite tiring to listen to sometimes, but I'm in the mood for it, very little can touch these genres for aggression.

It's a Scottish word that generally means "stab" or "an object that I could potentially stab someone with", but can also be a generic term for some kind of improvised street weapon, or use thereof.

In this case I used it to refer to throwing buses at people in Crackdown. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gfb4U9m_2Fc if you've not heard of it)

I am really digging the gabber stuff. I can see that working its way into my music in the future. Love the aggression!! I was always into trance as far as techno was concerned.....I didn't know it could actually get heavy.....onto the power noise...

Thanx again Oid.
