Put VERY simply: compression is used to make quiet stuff louder and/or loud stuff quieter.
For example on a bass guitar track, there might be parts that are too loud and other sections that are too quiet, which you may not want. You can use compression to even out the dynamics of the signal, i.e. when the bass track goes above a certain volume, the compressor reacts and reduces the loudness at those points.

Search for it on wikipedia if you want to know more.

Same word, but not the same process, think of it as compacting

That's a good one. My guess is, that for live-DVD's, they use compression on the instruments (compression guitar effect pedals and such) but not necessarily on the final mixed sound as a whole. Just a stupid guess though :P

I bet it's what fucks up the sound of every concert DVD I have. Very painful when it comes to Opeth's dvds... Acoustic part goes earpiercingly loud and then back to heavy part and you can't hear a thing.

I think he is talking about a DVD rip or something. When the file is made smaller with compression, like a .rar file - could be totally off the ball though

Nono. I don't usually rip my DVDs. I'm talking playing on my dvd player or mah PC.

Put it on the right sound mix setting? Stereo vs. surround? :P

Stereo through surround sounds like ass, and vice versa. 99% of all music dvds will have both mixes. Still bugs me that For Those Aboot to Rock didn't have a better mix, though... can barely hear the guitar at all on that thing...
