When Infinity came out on your own label, I refused to let my friends copy it. And that was when cd burners where starting to run hot, one bought cd amongst a group of friends, and every one would have a copy. They didn't think I was to cool for not letting them burn Infinity, I explained "Dev's setting up his own label, you can burn any other cd of mine just not that one, cause I think Dev deserves our support." Different these day's cause your established, and offering some one a copy of say Ziltoid, blow they're minds, and open up a whole discography of stuff they may want to buy. Or download.

I'm waiting for the CD personally. I don't look down on people that download first or anything, but I've got into this pattern where I'll buy albums I'm really interested in on the day of release, and listen to the CD all day at work. It just doesn't feel as good to do this if I've downloaded it instead of buying it,

I absolutely agree with everything in this post. Your opinion is the correct one.

I downloaded it and when I heard it about ten times in the first week, I pre-ordered it immediately! I can't wait to hear it again.

Im gunna wait until Ki comes in the mail to listen. Its special to get a CD and listen to it for the first time. Downloading doesn't have as much of a fulfilling feeling to it...

This is an essay written by Steve Coleman, a jazz sax player (Pretty awesome) on downloading music and giving it away for free. Not saying I agree or disagree, but throwing a wrench in the cogs for the sake of conversation...

Devin, you should post your Paypal account so people can give money to you that way. I've heard the cd, it's sick nasty, and I would rather you save the money shipping out a cd and just contribute straight up cash. Just a thought.

paypal donations don't really count to gig promoters and distributors, so i don't think it'd be that good just to save shipping expenses. I guess the paypal account is cool though, if i got millionaire i'd be a HevyDevy patron

And about giving stuff for free, i can totally understand why independent full-time musicians wouldn't opt for that kind of thing so often. But people like Pink Floyd, or Rolling Stones, or any rocknroll giant from the stone age where you could get plainly FILTHY RICH, if i were one of them, i'd totally chill about getting paid for stuff. I think most people who are frustrated musicians end up agreeing: since we have to get other jobs and have music as a hobby, passion counts more than income (which is obviously not the case with independent musicians, and shouldn't be).

anyhoo, it's good to see Dev's point of view on downloading, it means HevyDevyRecords will last way longer than the usual record company :P

Now just out of curiousity here, and might seem like a bit bold question for an independent artist, but if you come across this it'd be interesting to know what you think:

Devin, if you got all the money you needed for the rest of your life and the next 10 generations, and you just didn't have to pay bills anymore, ever, and wouldn't have to worry about money never ever again.....
would you release stuff for free?

Fix the economy!

Spend your food money on a new car? Get credit cards and become a bankslave?

Yay!
