Wow, its amazing some of the lesser end gear you post up here, makes me feel a ton better about having bits of poo to record with.

And the SSL! nice job brother!!! which one is it?! i know a guy here in melbourne who just bought the ssl that was used for 'master 'o' puppets' etc..., had to get a wall taken out and a crane to lift it in his studio hehehe.

Good luck with the mastering!!!!!

I broke down a while back and got this HD thing, and to me it sounds worlds better, and the room I mix in is pretty special.

Synchestra was my first mix, and I was getting advice from everyone around me in the production world, and it was like 'compress to tape, compress on the bus, compress everything under it, compress the master then make it louder...gold!' I understand the motivation (if youre good at compression)...new Nickelback is a good example.

With Ki, I just left everything flat, just some highs and lows, and no real compression. Some ssl on the master that just caught the peaks.

I'm mastering it myself at a studio with a Neve board. I've never done it before, but how hard can it be? Make it sound better and make all the tracks the same relative level, right? I'm not going to compress it in mastering though, maybe limit it a BIT, but I want it to be quiet when it's quiet and loud when it's loud.

It won't be the best sounding record in the world, but I think it'll sound good...pleasureable to listen to ...not as many sonic tricks kind of distracting.

You'll be the best judge I suppose...enjoy!

In my personal humbled opinion, Devin's sound is the best ive ever heard. From the echoed guitars, to the powerful vocals, to the synths and drums. It all blends together so well. So i guess what im trying to say is, any excessive mixing or over compression adds an extra "effect" (for lack of a better word) to his music. Judgement is a ridiculously awesome song.

My 2 cents about Metallica if anyone cares which i doubt. The Load albums are great by themselves. Perhaps to the old school Metallica fans, they are a sellout, but i happen to think they have very well written songs on them. Saint Anger sucks, and Death Magnetic is ok, but like Devin said, the sound quality is bad. All Nightmare Long is my fave on that disc.

If there's ONE thing that i've never got the hang of on mixing is compression.
And also the whole compress-then-eq vs eq-then-compress thing too.

Hell, i know shit about producing

the brickwalling on the new black (sticks out like a stickery outery thing on Almost Again especially) and synchestra is pretty obnoxious.

i'd pay to get unmastered or remastered by dev versions of these in a second

Less is more

Compression can work really well for individual instruments but on a mix it gets all pumpy, like dance music ha ha

You, sir, are amazing. That was fantastic- and the visuals just make it better. And I too genuinely love Metallica.
