There is this riff that me and my friends call "the pop-punk riff" I can't explain it, but every pop-punk band will have this riff in at least one of their songs. It was in Blink-182's "What's My Age Again?", it has been used by NOFX, Rancid, Honeycrack, Green Day (the basketcase bit) and all sorts of bands. Once you hear it you will be hearing it, and its varients, every fucking where!

try 5:25 in Ocean Machines and 3:00 in Japan
The first time i listened to ocean machines i was like wait a minute, where have i heard this before.
i know the rhythm is a lil different but i always think of the Japan when i hear that in ocean machines and vice versa.

hmm, since we were on the topic, I thought I would just add that.
:P

I believe that was completely intentional. I think it's cool that the album begins and ends with the same sound. It's something I didn't catch right away...

And yes, "Om" and "Regulators" do indeed share a riff. I guess it just fit, so he used it again...

The om/regulator riff is also very similar to Korn's song "Blind"

"Nobody's Here" and "Things Beyond Things". They're practically the same song, which is probably why I don't like "Nobody's Here" as much as the rest of the album.

care to explain a bit further? i cant see any similarities between these 2 songs?

Exact same chord progression with same rhythm, but he also used that progression in Bastard, Dynamics, and a ton of others. it's a favorite of mine, heh.

Don't forget the suicide riff recurring in Pixellate, Judgment, and Gaia. There's a ton more of this stuff nowadays. If I'm in a good mood, I like how he does that, but if I'm in a bad mood I don't, lol =P

I notice a lot of similar sounds in Dev's music. I heard him say once that he's a perfectionist and within days he finds something he would have done differently, so it doesn't surprise me at all that he would go in and redo something in a different way. It's cool, it just shows the evolutionary formation of music. I hate when some bands just "try something new" and it's like going from hot water to a cold room. I like how he keeps a good flow from one album to the next.

Well, certain melodies and sounds just work well with a certain idea, or concept of the song. Its just as simple as that. he doesnt recycle things because of lack of creativity, its just that certain things fit in multiple spots. Like a basic 4:4 rock beat, it is repeated in many songs because it is the perfect one to use.

^ my thoughts exactly. there are a few artists i've noticed that use a certain melody a few times through out albums.

Devin is a god with sound, it's perfection at its greatest.

I would never have picked up on the simularity between 'The Complex & Bastard', but now ive listened it does sound the same but sped up.
