Wander wrote:^That reminded me of what a friend of mine told me today. He's like a fan of metal and rock bands like Lamb Of God and Tool and whatever. He said he liked some Strapping Young Lad too. So I was like, yeah Devin is awesome, I especially like his solo material.

And so today he says to me "That Devin's solo material was pretty bad. I checked a couple of songs from youtube and they did nothing... SYL is a lot better" All I could say was "too bad"

It does make me a bit frustrated though. I think that for a metal fan, the solo material just takes so much more time and dedication to understand. It's a bit unfair to go to youtube, play a clip and go like "nah, this doesn't work"... But well, tastes are different and stuff... So what can I do? Let those who prefer SYL do so. I guess I should be happy he atleast enjoys one aspect of his music.

If it really was only a "couple" of songs, I'd ask which particular songs he tried to listen to. As Devin's material is so varied, only listening to two songs is definitely an incomplete representation of the rest of the music. Based on that, you could recommend some other choices: e.g., Earth Day is usually an instant hit with metal fans :) and maybe Random Analysis.

I remember seeing someone on this forum saying..."it's all about access points."

It just takes time and a few attempts.

For obvious reasons, Physicist might work for this guy. Or Infinity...I can't see how anyone who likes metal would be put off by Truth. But, also there are plenty of twists and turns on that record that bewilder most people. Eh, I dunno.

I was the other way around with SYL. I'd liked metal in the past, but when I got into Devy I was getting into several other different types of music...especially the weird stuff. My first SYL purchase/excursion was the self-titled album, and it sort of put me off. So, for a while, I thought SYL just wasn't for me, despite how much I liked the solo material.

Somewhere along the line it all fell into place. It was probably in those moments where I thought, "FUCK, right now I just want to hear something that will SMASH my face in."

Sometimes you NEED it.

"Officially" this is not up until tomorrow, but to all intentional porpoises...

Here is the product of a happy accident and A Good Time Had By All.

Haha! Well, firstly, thank you from my side of it - obviously it's as much Devin as it is my ability to write down what's said on a recorded mp3. And thank you too for taking the time to digest it.

And second, yup, Part Two is due in the New Year. I sort of had this idea of following the project to the end and speaking to him again after Record 4, once it's finished (or as "finished" as you can get with something like this, I guess), but obviously that's going to depend on scheduling and Europe. Part Two however was done at roughly the same time, but, well, for reasons that will become clear it's not quite as pretty. Leastways there's not as much of that same flow to it, but honesty to the process dictates it goes in - and plus it leaves a door open. Riddlez r awesumz.

Well done there Ruth!

And fyi guys, the live show and what I'm doing in the near future will probably draw some more metal fans in as well...I agree that sometimes the solo stuff is hard to accept on a song to song basis.

The live show is pretty freaking heavy, and Decon as well.

Not trying to suck up to metal fans, just stating a fact.

Only Infinity if he's willing to put in the time, I remember Infinity taking me the longest to "get", so to speak. Or it could click in one listen.

Yeah, it kinda does...

I'm gonna try turn his mind around with some of the best "metal-ish" type songs. Maybe it'll work.

100% agree on that.

i wasnt a big infinity fan when it first came out, but then again the song i heard was bad devil. whilst i actually like that song now (its funny), i couldnt get it back then. plus, at that point of dev's career, it was syl or ocean machines.

no, its up there in my top 5 fave albums by teh devster. truth makes me ruin my metaphorical pants every time i hear it.

funny how that happens, isnt it?

I just didn't know what to think of it. It was SO different. I didn't understand the humor and all, as I too was an OM and City fanatic. Something made me keep playing it though, and once everything clicked....it felt like I could crawl inside it. It's really hard to describe. I searched and searched for new things in the layers...and I STILL find shit I've never heard before. It is TIMELESS....and perpetually original. And, for the memories I have surrounding it....I think no matter what Dev does, Infinity will hold the most special place in my heart.
