Music? In television? Where?

We should feel very lucky that WE DO understand it and that we are able to enjoy Devin's music while others can't!

We're so amazing aren't we.

Sometimes I'm too fanatic when it comes to music. Sorry about that, folks.

All I want is a signs of justice in the music industry, to let people hear Dev's and other talented artists work, worldwide... Everybody should have same chances of getting into the spotlight, to give people real choice what they want to listen. I don't see that in mainstream media.

I really want Century Media to give their best, now. Dev is not a noob in a music industry. I think he deserves more respect and attention, than some of the new, hyped bands that will propably end after about third album.

It's just my personal view. Don't take no offence from me.

Peace.

Eh, it would be glorious for the rest of the world to aknowledge his existence.
but I would die a little inside if I heard his music on a mainstream radio station.
or if EVERYONE started listening to his music, it would give Devin a "mainstream" label and that's just lame.
not to mention put alot of pressure on Devin.

Why?

The whole "mainstream" label thing. Devin's individuality has been one of the more appealing characteristics of his music.
Or maybe I'm just a tool.

No, you're not a tool, I'm just provoking discussion. Why does the label of mainstream matter?

Now that's some intresting point of view. Can't disagree with you at some points.

I'm sure Century Media won't make a popstar out of Devin... just hope they give him a proper support due to his work, so everyone intrested on the globe will find his stuff without a problem.

I also wish, he'll find new listeners, hungry of quality sound, because his music is pretty universal and full of everything what makes it a true art, not just a money making machine for a record labels.

I submit that plenty of "mainstream" artists were just that, artists.
From all eras too...

Hah, I know, sometimes I forget flaming is rare in this forum.

I don't know why exactly I dislike the label of mainstream, I think it's just my distaste for a vast majority of modern music.
"mainstream" suggests a trend, which would classify Devin's music as trendy, I guess.
which I'm sure everyone in this forum would hate, including Devin himself.
but of course I can't speak for the man, I wonder what he would think of this?

But why is trendy a problem? What's wrong with lots of other people liking something?

What did I write? Oh, it was a typo, I meant "we're bunch of total wankers". You know, keys are so close to each other.

Major problem with a popularity is killing stuff with playing it over and over again everywhere. I grow to hate Moby's music which I considered sorta nice before - they played it on ad-nauseam rotation, everytime I've turned TV on there was Moby on it (it was the time when there was some music on the MTV and there was excellent German music TV Viva2 which isn't around anymore boo).

Folks, guess how I first met with Devin Townsend's music... Yes, thanks to the freakin MTV.

Very long time ago, in the VHS era, I was sitting to the late nights to watch and record "Mtv Rock" shows, with some blonde model chick hosting and then out of a sudden, yes... Strapping Young Lad's "City" videoclip.

I was nicely shocked and next thing I've done, I bought "City" and "Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing"... Then I started to dig his solo career and I was feeling lucky that I discovered that artist.

Maybe some people don't realise, how mainstream media can help a good artist to find his listeners and I'm not even talking about huge frequency of playing the same clip, every hour in every music show... sometimes playing it once in a seven days period can really make a promotion.

Today's MTV and other mainstream look very different, than some years ago... and yeah, Moby was played to death, even in tv shows that prefered other styles of music.

But can't you just not listen to the radio or watch the television stations? Ratings-based things like that actually DO go away when you ignore them.
