Really? What makes you think that?

Imperial is another example, pitch shift on some backing vocals.

Don't get me wrong, dev can growl but the planet smasher voice is pitchshifted in places. I would put money on it

I doubt it. Much too clear and un-'damaged.'

That video of the Devour vocal recording definitely sounds painful to me, I can almost taste the blood from when I tried that sound myself a few times. Most of Devin's usual screams aside from that sound fairly effortless to me-- they still sound super heavy and extreme but there's no painful 'shoving' of the vocals, it's all very fluid and natural sounding for that style.

In my opinion the vocal 'fry' technique mentioned early is the way to go for that sound, when you get it right it just leaps out of your throat with no effort.

Well, as Josiah Tobin put it...plus even I can almost make the herman sound, just not as "even". I don't think there's a pitcher in Imperial either, it must be Fry.

The only song I've hered where it's obvious there's a pitch shifer involved is the end of Satans Ice Cream truck... but that's kinda fits well to that song anyway:)

I do remember Dev saying somewhere that when hes growling/screaming, he feels like he needs to put echos and stuff on it to buff it up a little.

Dunno if that helps the debate there at all.

I was always under the impression that Dev was just freaking hardcore and screaming his shit straight out.

There are some songs where I think Dev is belting his heart out by just screaming (Shitstorm) while others it seems more controlled (You Suck, Earth Day).
I'm thinking vocal fry.

It took me a decade, but I too can wail like a banshee. I am now learning how to sing clean, which may take another decade for all I know. The most important things I've learned are this: never sing something that hurts, just work up to it, and always do things personally. By the first, I would give the example of that scream in "Deadhead". When I first heard it, I used to srtain my voice to try and hit it every time and fail miserably. NOw that I've trained myself, I can hit it without trying, and if I had to try I would be damaging my chords to do so. For the second, I'd give the example of Attila Csihar. I spent my "black metal vocal training" trying to emulate his voice, and when I finally got my throat round his repitiore, I realised my own voice does things that I have not heard him do. I may not be able to belt out on stage for hours on end (although this remains to be tested), but I use my own voice to screech, and shall use my own voice to sing when I've got that down properly. This, I feel, are the most important points.

Still, I'm lucky enough that Dev's vocals can only go about a tone higher than mine, it seems. 8)
