why is it that so many of devs live recordings sound shit? just watched some abba live and and it was sweet as, but then the download concert of syl sounded rank, the guitars are like an AM transistor, what gives? No question of the energy of the gig, but thats it.

I don't think Dev or the rest of the band had anything to do with that mix

Besides....the Download set sounds fantastic to me

Have you seen Devin live? Each time I did the sound was spot on. In particular, SYL during the 'All In The Family' tour in...err...2003?...was possibly the heaviest thing I have heard. Heavy and clear. Stunning.

I think that generally the recordings of Devin playing live that are out there are quite amateur. The Download footage has great camera action but not so great sound. I suspect that ABBA had been mixed a bit better than the Download set for SYL.

For some great live Devin recordings, check out the No Sleep 'Til Bedtime album from SYL and also the Synchestra bonus DVD, with the DTB 'In The Safe Zone' recording.

Yeah, the CDs I've heard of Devin/SYL live don't really compare with the sound quality you'd get if you were at the concert. That probably goes for a live recording of any band though.

Maybe it's because Devin's live work is actually live and not lip synced from tape? :P

HAHAHAHAHAHA

The sets sound great live at Download, but recorded....not so. Recorded the Download highlights at like 3am on Channel 4, they all sounded a bit pleh (except the headliners funnily enough)

The download mix would have had nothing to do with Dev

The mix on 'For Those Aboot to Rock' on the otherhand would have...

It sounds, like the way Dev likes it... kind of raw. I think its listenable, but to be honest, i tend to prefer the spot on mixes as well. But then again, i cant imagine Dev music sounding like, something that Andy Sneap would do - whose recordings are "picture perfect" (if that makes sense).

(For those who don't know him, you probably know the bands he's recorded with: Arch Enemy, Killswitch Engage, Testament, Megadeth, Cradle of Filth + lots more) (more recent albums, no 80s stuff)

There is room for improvement though - maybe he'll make a DVD for the upcoming tour for the new albums, and maybe the sound will be focused on more, who knows?

I was at Download when SYL played, I was towards the front and couldn't hear anything. Whole thing was a mess, Opeth also suffered from this the same year :(

Also ABBA are immense! Of course they sound good live.

I didn't dislike the sound of the Download set. I even kind of liked it since it sounded quite huge for a live concert. And I'm used to hearing much worse in live situations than this. Besides that, Abba's music isn't as chaotic and not as "dense" usually which also makes it easier to create a good live sound in a way.

geez, i dunno, might be a stretch but i can sometimes draw comparisons tween devs music and theirs, in a layered/wall of sound way. true, the abba wall is made of marshmellows and is icky sweet, but its a wall none the less.

Whats ABBA? :D

I like devs recording live i havent found one yet that hasn't been listenable. even the 97 one off the website i thought was good. download and ftatr both seem fine and safezone even better. i honestly cannot slate the mixing as it is what you would expect from an extreme metal band (for it to be raw and dirty)

Peace out :guitar:
