The place to speak about Dev's current projects, and everything yet to come

There are many factors I think

His ability in production. To make each album not just a collection of music, but a living, breathing entity. The wall of sound, the atmospherics, the over-lapping of a fuck-load of audial information.

The purity of his musical emotion and how each album has its own emotional personality. Ocean Machine is this depressive teenager, City is this overtly-pissed off young man, Terria is this burnt-out junkie, and Synchestra like a spiritual hippie. etc etc

The originality, the strangeness, and the sheer power of his music

Honestly I see him more as a composer than just a musician. Even in the albums he produces like Natural Born Chaos, Undoing Ruin and Malice and The Magnum Heart you can tell that he is the man at the controls and in a way, just as important to the album as the players themselves.

I don't know, IMO he is like a Salvador Dali, a Ernest Hemmingway
A true genius of his craft

Emotion, pure and simple. Whichever emotion he is feeling at the time is transferred through his lyrics and music.

Its what makes his songs so timeless and mean that I never ever get bored of listening to them.

It's an impossible task to explain why one listens to music (for me, at least...)
The way I see it (I men... hear it!), music is a state of mind.
I dunno how to explain otherwiese; I could say that is was the emotions, the great vocalharmonies, the songwriting...
But it wouldn't do - my feelings about music - justice.
Music is more than that.
That's why I say that's it's a state of mind...

Or I could just fuck off...!

Impact, excessiveness, the ability to represent emotion in uncontrolled, raw, violent forms. I strive for the same thing with my own musick.

I think if I had to choose a runner-up it would be Devin's complete lack of subtelty without sacrificing intricacy. The feeling of a song will hit you hard right away, but with more listens it still keeps its effectiveness.

because he's got both musical ends of the spectrum covered for me, SYL for the heavyness and DTB and his solo stuff for the melodic softer stuff.....oh and i know i'm getting something different with each release :)

i listen because devin's music is just simply amazing. his skills at composition, song and lyric-writing and singing and guitar playing are unparalleled, as is his originality and eclecticism. there is no band i can say that sounds at all like anything devin has created, and almost no artist matches him in anything. i read a review of "alien" that called devin the heavy metal zappa, and i think that's probably the most accurate description of him. just pure musical genius.
