In school I was assigned a project in which I had to choose a great thinker and find a quote that exemplified their genius. While most people chose the obvious ones like Albert Einstein and Socrates, I decided to go a different route and do mine on Devin.

My teacher thought it was a amazing idea. So I have the teachers approval, I have a quote, but I was wondering if Devin could expand on this quote a bit more so I could have a bit more to work with.

It was from an interview back in 2000 from this website http://devin.trivialbeing.net/articles.php?c=ms_nov00

Here's the quote:
"There are limits that you must accept as a human, but there are no limits that you have to accept as a musician."

Maybe something about what makes him think that way would be great. Or if he has more to say on the topic, that would also be good.

I know you both are probably busy getting ready for your baby, but if you have a chance to ask him about this I would greatly appreciate it (and so would my grade!)

Thanks!

On the topic:

As a human, you can't go around doing everything you like, because sooner or later you'll hurt another human. That's the ultimate limit of human beings - the hurting of others is forbidden outside the specially coded exceptions. Humans have to live with each other and are limited by each other. We have trouble with that and we should work on that. Individually.

Whereas in music, which is art for the sake of art, there are no limits but those who we ourselves (consciously or unconsciously) impose on ourselves. There are no limitations inherent to the music itself. Anything is go. You can do whatever you want, because the musical form allows you to.

And you can't use music to hurt people, you can only abuse music to hurt people. The freedom of musical expression does not override the limit of the human being. But within the music, what the musical form offers in terms of expressing oneself, there are no limits.
