I am currently studying mathmatics here in Holland but I never liked French... I'm not sure people who are good at math can be considered "smart". They think differently about problems but that doesn't always mean it's the best way.

But ofcourse there are a lot of connections between music and mathmatics. Just look at writing math and writing music-arrangements on paper; in both cases you are trying to describe incredible abstract systems on a piece of paper... It amazes me how a simple mathematical equation can describe very complex systems, and that a seamingly simple collection of music-notes can move people so much!

(I'm sorry for my English, I'm Dutch)

I find it sad that people confuse Radiohead with George Orwell.

Actually, I'm an industrial engineer (I'm not boasting about this, I'm just using it to strengthen my comments! lol) and I studied math or algorithms or what have you for many years and I am trilingual (english, italian, french).

How so? Well, I grew up in an italian environment where we spoke italian at home and I was educated at english institutions. However, I have always worked with and been surrounded by french people/friends.

All in all, my point is you can be good at math and at french! But ask me to play an instrument as well as Devin and you'll have a good laugh.

I guess it's really about finding what you're good at and using it to make you happy.

Hmmn, I always got maths but never felt enough use for it personally to really use it, in my own music the maths of arrangements and or melodies usually comes after the creative aspect, as in I listen to it and realise I could fuck up that rhythym much more, I could add in much more here and there etc.. The simplest side would be an infinite equation, which for the way my mind works is shown clearest in sound itself.

I, myself, suck at math. Well, I wouldn't say "suck" but still, I'm not too good at it.
I started studying French recently and got an A in it :).
They say that people who are good at languages and arts suck at math and other logical things.

I would say im pretty good at math. I went through Calculus in college just fine. Im not a math major though, so I dont have to worry about going much higher.

I would think that being good at math makes you smart, because nobody who is stupid is good at math. But being smart doesnt make you god at math. If your good at music your smart, if your good at chemistry, your smart, even if your bad at math.

With all of Devin's musical writing skills, im kind of surprised that he isnt good at math. I would find it a very similar thing, arranging music and doing a math problem.

Oh god, did I just see someone post linear algebra in this thread?
