what exactly are overdubs? and if they are what I think they are whats the point of realesing a live album if your gonna tamper with it in the studio? was the sound quality that bad?

Im not taking a dig but I was just curious.

Imagine...
You play a great gig, with a great audience and so on... Perfect time, super show...
You record it
You realize the sound is good, but not as powerful and great as you would have wanted it to be.
You go to the studio and record/change/improve the parts you are not 100% satisfied with.

And you release one the best live ever released: No Sleep 'til Bedtime.

Without overdubs, live albums usually sound like bootlegs.

If you listen before Far Beyond Metal the audience is clearly chanting "king rau. king rau." It's neat.

An overdub could simply be duplicating the recording, taking crowd noise out of it, mastering the volume of the instruments and whatnot and then layering it all back over the original recording, thus having the band louder than the audience.

he never does the "take this away" bit, its a bit lengthy vocalwise and its also a multi layered vocal bit

As already being said, sometimes this only refers to changes concerning the volume of the crowd, while the music itself is untouched. Of course, on the other hand there are often major changes - I remember hearing that one of the singers from the german band Die Ärzte re-recorded his complete vocal performance from one of their live albums in the studio. I do understand it when someone sees it as "cheating" when such major changes are made and when this is the case, I really ask myself what's the point in doing a "live" album. But as far as Strapping are concerned; re-doing some parts here and there... Face it, it's nothing exceptional at all.

Kiss' "Alice" album, the one that marked their breakthrough, was completely overdubbed. Guitars, drums, vocals, everything.

SYL might have overdubbed a bit of For Those Aboot To Rock? The part where Devin breaks two strings in one song maybe?

I know James Labrie redid all his vocals for at least one of Dream Theater's YtseJam Records releases. I think the one I read about was The Number Of The Beast in the (live) Covers Series.

The band redid some parts here and there; but I've read in an interview with Dev where he said that they at least did the overdubs in one-take, so they were at least ethical when they did it!

Not quite as blatant as Type O Negative's Origin of the Feces (that's how they spell it) album..

basically told everyone that they had a fake crowd into the studio, did a fake show and made more money..
