Hey Tracy,

I was just wondering how things started with Ziltoid. Devin seemed to be really exhausted from his heavy writing and touring schedule with SYL when he announced that he was going to take a brake, and he also stated that he wanted to take time off from writing new music. So... Did he get kissed by the muse one night and started writing the material from one day to the other, or was it more like he never really stopped creating new music, writing melodies and riffs here and there?

I remember him saying that "this one is coming fast and furious" in one of his posts, and I still don't really know where he took the time to come up with a new album, the whole concept behind it and the ideas related to it while also enjoing his new role as a father at the same time. He isn't that interested in something called "sleep", right?

Frankly I was oblivious with baby during the process. It started with making the puppet then he got an idea for the theme song which evolved into a whole album. I was otherwise occupied so he went to hang out in the studio to pass time. I think he just couldn't stand being idle so the brain just started going.

I wish my efforts to "pass time" would have such enormous results. The Dev surely knows how to fight boredom

Alright, thanks for the little insight!

yeah, i'm from ottawa and im in a death metal band back there called "dissentient" http://www.myspace.com/dissentientmetal (the song transparency on the ending is heavily influenced by devin... i have a band technically since we do play live and such, but i had to compose everything myself. its not arrogance or anything, but i just have a vision where i want certain sounds to go, so i took full creative control. all my band members have other projects that they have on the side.

i was never a "rock" musician. but i've always thought devin stood above metal for me. (the only artist)

everything the guy does makes me cream my pants.

anyways to the initial point:

you said that he couldnt stand being idle so he recorded... well im in calgary right now just working so i can make some money for my appartment back in ottawa, and all i do everytime i come hear is try to record my own projects. Im very prolific in writing out here. the scenery is so much better than ottawa... last summer i recorded some electronic/metal stuff while i was here. This time around im trying to experiment with doing more clean vocals, and more "rock" based riffs.
My biggest influences for this project is defeinately devin, katatonia, and type o negative.
but yeah when im bored i cant stop writing music.
