One thing that always intrigued me about Townsend's music was the usage of ambience. As a fan of ambient music, I can't help but wonder what ambient artists influenced this element in his music?

If I were to venture a guess, I'd say Brian Eno because of the meticulous and perfect production that Townsend puts into every album, and the high importance is has. For some reasion, I also wanna say I hear some Biosphere when it comes to songs like the Death of Music.
Of course, I'm probably wrong about those two. I'd like to point out however, that I don't think he's ever talked his ambient influences, and surely he has some, no?

I tried getting a full answer before the tour but wasn't able. Brian Eno wasn't an influence but he listened to a lot of New Age as a teenager. He said the most influential was Rapoon and Zoviet France. Of course Enya as well. And in response to that other thread, when he was young he listened to Synchestra that inspired the name of the last record.

No, although if anyone could use its benefits, it would be him. Slightly high-strung... :)

Very interesting stuff. If anyone cares, you can hear songs from Rapoon and Zoviet France, among many others, at http://www.epitonic.com. You have to register but it's free.

So what influenced his Devlab stuff? A lot of that isn't ambient but more 'musique concrete' type stuff, taking samples and arranging them. Did any artists in particular inspire him making Devlab?

Steve Roach's Halycon Days isn't ambient, but is pretty much anti-stress in CD form.
