I guess most of us remember Devin's "Here's the 'story'... Next" - thread, where he commented on Synchestra song by song.

The Dev wrote:Notes From Africa - Summarizes the whole damn thing. References and opposes 'Love?' from Alien, and really hammers the point of the record home, a real solid groove and a VERY STRANGE MELODY that has been in my head since Infinity. Salman Rushdie.

With that information in mind, one can easily recognize the part where Devin really sings Salman Rushdie.

Though I haven't read anything from Rushdie yet (those of you who are even less familiar with him might check out wikipedia), but I know there have been lots of controversial debates about him (and more than just debates, of course). So I'm really curious why his name appears on Notes From Africa. Oh, I know and I understand that Devin doesn't like talking about his lyrics that much, and that he sometimes uses words just for their sound and that we, the listeners, shouldn't overanalyze everything he does. I just wondered if Devin ever read one of Rushdie's books and if so, what he thinks of it.

No, he's never read one. He's not a big reader.
