I kind of understand lyrics as I've seen people on various internet forums say "can you send me the lyrics to ths album cos I downloaded it" to which my immediate reaction is always "if you want them, go buy the cd". However, I use lyric sites from time to time to quote lyrics I can't be bothere dto write out.

As for tabs, I always thought it was difficult to take legal action on them as they are technically a user's interpretation. It's a real shame because it will definately discourage a lot of beginning/casual guitarists

I look at alot of lyrics sites because alot of musicians just don't have lyircs in the sleeve, and i can't always figure out what they are saying. It's emabarrasing when you are with other fans and you sing the wrong words! Lol. Like with The Wildhearts's "Vanilla Radio". Lots of fans were convinced the chorus "Where's....my Elvis? Where's.....my Elvis? Where's...etc) was actually "My elephants sweat. My elephants sweat" etc.

Aaaaanyway. Music industry = bastards.

Same thing happenend a few months ago in France, about the lyrics only (90% of the french population doesn' tknow what a guitar is, so tab sites must not be a problem...). Most wellknown lyrics sites were send a mail with a nice warning of legal action being taken if they didn't took the lyrics down.

There have been an attempt to create an association to have a bit more weight against the music industry and to make things a bit more solid, involving artists or artists associations too. AFAIK, it didn't work and the association was down a few months later.

I know one of those site asked many label if they could display the lyrics for free, so on this particular site there's a whole list of about 50 different labels that agreed their lyrics to be published.

On a lot of other sites, for a while only a part of the lyrics was available (mostly 1st verse + chorus).
Last time I checked, the whole lyrics were available though it was still written "lyrics are not available entirely". As I'm not really a big fan of popular french music -to say the least- I don't know much about it.

Oh, I wasn't trying to say that it applies to everything, but that i "kinda" see the argument in that sense, because I have seen people do that

Well I guess, if the tabs and lyrics are available in tab/lyric books, then it would be violation of the copyright to put them on the internet.
But for most songs/albums/artists there are no official lyric/tab books, but it's always cool to read the lyrics along with the song, or to try and play a song yourself using tabs.

But I think the music industry are being dicks it they ban this stuff.
