The Death Of Music is without question, my favorite Devin Townsend song of all-time. Period.

i must say this song kicks ass, but im rarely in the mood to listen to it, but when i am, to me its the best track on the album, and i must say i was quite confused about the sample at the end too, but it fit in strangely well...

Not to mention that it contains what is possibly some of the most emotional vocal work Devin has ever done (at least, IMO).

And that's really saying something.

Yeah, it seems like Devin poured his heart and soul into that song. He mentioned in a fan interview(?) once that while recording that track, he hid up under a desk in the recording room because he was so freaked out by the song.

The Death of Music is utterly incredible. Like most people I listened to it the first time expecting a Dev metal epic like Earth Day or Planet Rain and I got a whole bunch of... not much at all. But on about the third or fourth time it really clicks that this is a piece of music unlike many others. The lyrics are incredible, the whispered voices are so damn moving and meaningful and the vocal part at the end of the last "Its like a death becomes musical" is one of the corwning glories of Dev's entire catalogue.

So... you could say I like it a tiny bit. ;)

Death of music is definately one of those "Alone in your room, lights off, under your covers with headphones on in the middle of the night." songs. I had to listen to it about 3 times before I started loving it. Each time I listen to it I get a different feeling from it, sometimes it makes me feel a bit scared, sometimes it relaxes me, sometimes it makes me just think. Great song.

i once was late for a shift at my old job because TDOM came on my minidisc and i didn't want to ruin the experience of hearing it by moving, so i just stayed on till the song finished. this did not go down well... :D

So what do you think he means with it?

BTW... I'm really finally getting into Ocean Machine for real now. I've been quite crappy on that, but in one way it's great. This means that I have something to do while waiting for Synchestra :D

That's a different sample - the one from Florida "remember when you farted on that kid". That had 2 people.

The first time in Japan, Sony (the label) loaned everone little video cameras for their stay. That sample was from Devin walking around Fukuoka at night alone with this video camera. He was in awe of the whole thing and you can hear it in his voice. Unfortunately all of the video footage was destroyed in our flood.

Couldnt agree more.

My favourite song. Ever. By anyone. It hits a level that I didnt know existed in musical form until I sat down and listened to it with the whole album. The Funeral/Bastard/d.o.m. trio is needless to say probably my favourite half hour of music ever.

Wow, I've just joined this forum, hoping to see views and comments like this about this song... I guess my hopes hath been fulfilled...

I always thought he was talkin' about actual Death, for such a serious song, how could he not have been talkin' about it I always thought.

Definatly in the middle of the song where's he whispering ''No Matter where we run, we will simply not be alone''
Those lyrics inspired almost beyond... the beyond!

Fucking A!

I was in Malta last year, and the humidity was real high, walkin' along the seafront, around 1am ... that's where it hit me...
