First of all I must admit that I'm a huge fan of Devin's work. Especially he's solo stuff...

I play in a band, we are trying to record a demo and I thought I'd post this little clip for you to enjoy (or not... :P). It's pretty rough still, we are going to mix it later on...

Here's the link to the mp3.

Hey man, this stuff sounds nice.
I just had some quick comments. First off, do you guys have a singer? Because I'm really missing the vocals. The beauty of Dev's music (and more bands) is that it's arranged around vocals and guitar. He really composes and arranges his music like an orchestra, every instrument completing another one.
The guitarsound is not really my thing, but that's just a matter of taste. The lead played around 1:00 sounds a little static, I'd really try to play it more laidback, maybe with some added delays and reverbs (as long as we're talking Devin here :))
The idea of the song is really nice, and I'm curious to the finished, mixed product.
Can I just ask a quick question, of where and with what tools did you record this?

The lead guitar from 1:00 to the end is just the vocal melody which is going to be removed (or mixed really quiet) after we get the vocals done. This clip is the end of a 6 minute song. And I'm not sure about the guitar sounds either, what do you dislike about the guitars? The lead sounds or the rhythm guitars?

The technical sh*t: We use Cubase SX3, the drums are triggered and the sounds replaced with EZ Drumkit from hell, guitars are all recorded directly (drop C tuning) and the effects added later come from either guitar rig 2 or amplitube. Everything is done with my laptop and a small&cheap M-Audio interface. I still haven't done any mixing because I'm waiting for the other guys to finish their tracks, so don't worry if it sounds like mush.

We are making (or at least trying to do :P) a homegrown full length album.

The first riff rocks well. The breakdown to the quieter bit is a bit crude, I'd try to come up with something for that. The following part is good, though I would orchestrate the guitar harmonies a bit differently - now they sound a bit weird in places. In the mixing stage I would add quite a lot of reverb and delay to achieve a feeling of space. If you have the possibility, you could try recording some guitars with a mic and a real amp. The sound of the plug-in guitar rigs is good, but the real thing always adds a bit color. Just my opinion.
Overall, it's a promising clip and could have the ingredients for a good song. I wish you all the best for your respectable homegrown album project..!

This sounds quite good to me, even the breakdown and guitar tone, which were previously mentioned to not be up to par I suppose... I dunno, it sounds excellent to me. The lead guitar in the last part is a bit up front, but you did mention that being a vocal melody in the final version and being mixed quieter anyway.

The one problem I do have with this is the very, very triggered sound of the drums-- You said they were triggered, so I'm assuming you mean from a real kit. If so, you might want to mix the original sounds in there a bit too, right now it sounds a lot like programmed drums in some parts.

The drums were triggered using e-drums (we don't have enough mics to mic a whole acoustic set). I could try editing them to sound a bit more natural, and what comes to the drums, I don't care if they sound a bit programmed as long as they sound good (of course an acoustic set would be the best but thats kind of not an option at this stage).

Yes I agree with toad, the breakdown is a bit crude, i'll think of something to fix it.

Otherwise thanks a ton for all the comments! I can post the final version when we get it done.

Cheers!
