I don't assume all of you are "into" metal, but some of us got into metal pretty late in our lives. (It was 14 for me.)

Here's what I liked a lot before metal scarred me for life:

Berlin
Depeche Mode

Wang Chung
The Naked Eyes
Level 42
Mr. Mister

The Traveling Wilburys
Journey
Tears For Fears

Eurythmics
OMD
Phil Collins

Why in the hell I liked that crappy drum sound, I don't know. But I do know I've always had a thing for damn good vocals.

I used to listen to what my big brother listened because I didn't know anything about music. First my brother listened to rap, and he had Dr. Dre's 2001 which was probably my first favourite cd when i was like 9 (eventhough i didn't own it). Ironically enough, my brother became a skinhead and he got rid off all his rap music and started to look for other stuff. He found Slayer and through that I found metal. That was about 7 years ago (I don't share my brothers ideologies).
Although when I think about it, as a kid the music I loved most was music from games I loved. I have a very personal connection to Zelda:3s darkworld theme. I used to hum Red Alerts Hell March with my mouth when I walked to school when I was 7. I always drummed the beat of this song on desks and stuff:

Used to think these guys were the shit. Still think more bands today need a horn section.

The 2 bands I heard the most in my youth were Journey and Rush. I only like Rush to this day.

Yeahh... After that I've listened to lots of electronic stuff, The Prodigy, Orbital, Underworld, Future Sound of London, The Orb, Photek, LFO and tons of others - mainly from infamous "techno trax" compilations popular in the 90s :). On tapes, of course. Also, well, computer music. Not only from games - Amiga or PC (DOS) demoscene tunes in .mod, .s3m or .xm format in all their 8-bit glory :). To this day I think the demoscene delivered one of the classiest electronic tunes I've ever heard - awesome, stylish stuff without a trace of shitty euro-techno popular back then. Not to mention spiffy pictures made on hardware without any 3D capabilities whatsoever

My contact with guitar music actually started from electronic one as well - first proper Ministry record, "Twitch", was a 100% electro album. Next one of them I've heard was Psalm 69 :)

Nirvana since Nevermind was released when I was three years old, Come As You Are was on repeat on my mini cassette player with colourful buttons. And then Fat of the Land came out when I was 7, it's been one of my favourites half my life. Other than that, I guess it was just shitty billboard pop music before I started to get into stuff like Iron Maiden and Nightwish when I was around... 14?

Hmmm. First it was backstreet boys. Then it was more rock stuff, like Linkin Park and Green Day. Green Day became the big thing for me. I searched for nearly every album, studio or live. I even scruffed my hair sometimes to imitate Billie Joe's hair. Ahh..strange times. The weird thing was my friend was listening to Infected Mushroom, NIN, Pantera, Metallica and Korn on his speakers. EVEN Strapping Young Lad  . I was only 15 at the time but damn I was so close to getting into Dev then.

Most awesome classic rock/prog. Anything my mum and dad listened to like Jethro Tull, ELP, King Crimson (seen all three), Pink Floyd, Led Zep, The Who, Meat Loaf, Eric Clapton, G'n'R. I only manage to get into metal when my sister started listening to Nirvana (a guy at school she had a crush on did too), so I'd read all the Kerrang Magazines and check out the bands in there; Korn, Metallica, Limp Bizkit (I know...), One Minute Silence, Earthtone9, Stampin' Ground etc.

For some reason I was not very cool in school.

My music history is like that (not that great in fact, I wasn't really interested in music as a kid, until the nu-metal era) :
10-13y.o. : eurodance (2 Unlimited & Culture Beat were my favourite (still remember some verses), but there was a lot of funny stuff, Ice MC, E-Type, Red Nex as said above  )
not that much music in between, Nirvana was at the top at that time I think, but I didn't really care
16y.o. : Prodigy (I'm starting to like the sound of guitar, yay !)
18y.o. : Limp Bizkit and nu metal, I want a guitar !
20y.o. : Bodom, I have a guitar !
22y.o. : SYL, I still play like shit !
And since then well, I stopped playing and nothing will probably ever be as powerful as SYL/DTB has been, so I'm just trying to diversify my tastes.

Before high school it was eurodance (which one of my brothers listened to quite extensively), Queen/Boston/U2 (which my other brother listened to quite extensively) and Dire Straits (which my parents listened to a lot). Then in high school it was Nirvana and The Offspring, with some Dead Kennedys and a bit of Fatboy Slim and Moby. Also a lot of video game soundtracks from games I played a lot back then. Towards of the end of high school Metallica entered the picture somewhat (mostly Garage Inc.), and through Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 discovered my big love for Rush. First year in university I was introduced to power metal (HammerFall, oh yes) and from there on I branched into the rest of the world of metal. Got into Dev after the release of Alien (Love?, Skeksis and Shitstorm mostly) and before the release of Synchestra.

I don't consider Kiss or Def Leppard metal, but...I could go on and on anyhow....
