It seems like everything I listen to is dudes all around. If I am to succeed in writing a novel or epic metal opera or something with female characters, I need to understand the female narrative/musical perspective - get in touch with my feminine side. Can anybody recommend my some really good music that will make me feel like a woman? Thanks in advance.

PJ Harvey:

And Bjork

It's a shame there aren't any women like these in metal. Or at least I've never heard of them.

I really recommend these albums : Vespertine, Medulla, Homogenic

She isn't a woman at all. She's a strange changeling left here by the pixie folk.

Another vote for Stina Nordenstam, and I'll throw in Joanna Newsom. Some might say that she's an acquired taste though.

Kate Bush is a fantastic recommendation... get Hounds of Love or The Sensual World. Joni Mitchell is one of the best Canadian musicians ever... If you dig her, get some Alison Krauss as well. And if you're going to get a Bjork album the one that stands out above the rest is Homogenic.
I also really like the following albums...

Patti Smith - Horses... she's the godmother of punk.
Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
Fiona Apple - WHEN THE PAWN hits the conflicts he thinks like a king
What he knows throws the blows when he goes to the fight
And he'll win the whole thing before he enters the ring
There's no body to batter when your mind is your might
So when you go solo, you hold your own hand
And remember that depth is the greatest of heights
And if you know where you stand, then you know where to land
And if you fall it won't matter, cuz you know that you're right

PJ Harvey - Rid of Me, To Bring You My Love... she's probably my favorite out of all of these.
Beth Orton - Comfort of Strangers, Central Reservation
Neko Case - Blacklisted, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood... She's also Canadian, was in the band "The New Pornographers" whom you surely must have heard of if you're into indie at all. She plays alternative country... Fantastic voice
