There's a similar idea in a manga, "Biomega" by Tsutomu Nihei, except the germs feed on a dead astronaut orbiting in space after their spaceship exploded or something, the germs spread all over the planet and start to fall back in the atmosphere, contaminating most of the planet in 24 hours. Well that's some SF, but if that happened for real, I wonder what could happen.
