For those not familiar, Eyvind Kang is a Seattle-based musician/composer who has performed with a host of acts, including Mr. Bungle and Secret Chiefs 3. He just released a new album called ATHLANTIS, and it is one of the most beautiful recordings I have heard. It is a (mostly) live record, recorded in an Italian opera hall with a 30-piece choir, a 4-piece brass ensemble, two guitarists, and two vocal soloists (one of who happens to be Mike Patton).

The music alternates between neo-classical/choral arrangements, minimalist ambient pieces over which the soloists perform, and dark, ambient soundtrack-type stuff. The music is repetitious, like Kang's other album with Patton (Virginal Coordinates), but it uses repetition effectively.

Both singers and phenomenal on this recording, and i consider it to be some of Patton's best work in the last ten years. Especially considering it was his first time singing live without a microphone.

Virginal Coordinates is also highly recommended, and even a bit more accessible than Athlantis.

Athlantis is really beautiful, but I still prefer Virginal Coordinates...amazing moods and melodies!
