Meshuggah's re-recorded NOTHING

Holy shit.

One of the greatest albums I have ever heard sounds even more fucking incredible than it did. The new guitars are FUCKING MASSIVE and it's all way clearer. The new drums are nice and solid (I loved the old drums but these ones are punchier) and the new vocal effects are well cool.

I daresay that metal people will like this version a helluva lot more than the first issue. The album now sounds a lot more aggressive, it hurts your ears even more than the old version and it just seems to be a more metal affair the whole way through.

The DVD kicks ass too, seeing them bust out "In Death is Death" so effortlessly makes me want to cry. And Jens kills live, he fucking kills. Besides pulling some of the best faces any front man has ever pulled he does his thing fucking immaculately. Sounds incredible.

I could rant and rave forever. You should just buy it. If you have never liked Ghost Reveries then you won't like the reissue. If you have never liked Nothing then this version may help you understand.

It was a good thing i happened to give my copy of Nothing away. It gives me a reason to buy this version instead! I saw the ad on their Myspace, but it seemed a bit weird to me. Not many bands re-issue and album that was made 3 years ago... Nonetheless, this rules! :D

It's not that great. It doesn't sound quite as brutal to me.

I will surely be picking this up soon. I can surely give my old one to somebody else too.

Interesting to see some people prefer the old one still! I am sure it will rock though.

This is quite sexcellent indeed! It really does add a lot to the original version. And on a non-music based note, I think the art's better looking in blue. Meshuggah really can do no wrong.

so enlighten me, are you saying that the new and flamboyantly massive sound will make up for the monotony of the original?

I like it. Guitars sounds much better.

Vocals, too.

I'll take it! :P

I heard the re-issue and had the chance to compare it side-by-side with the original (which I don't own at the moment but heard bits of before the re-issue)... it's very hard to decide which one I prefer. I like the snare sound of the original much more, the new snare is too sharp and extremely piercing at mid-high volume levels. The new guitars sound nice and they have a very heavy sound on their own, but I think I prefer the more rattly sound of the originals in several songs, such as Rational Gaze.

It's hard to say, really. The new one seems a bit more over-compressed, which I'm not fond of to be honest... Though it could just be that the kick has a much looser, bassier sound. I think my conclusion would be that they're just different sides of the same coin-- I can't really say one is better than the other at the moment, without extensively comparing them again... And I think it'd take away some of the enjoyment if I over-analyzed the music that much. The original sounds a bit more energetic I think, whereas the new version is much more 'controlled' sounding and more polished.

to me, at least on my amateur-guitar-tech (read: drummer  ) ear, sounds like the biggest addition to the guitars, besides the mixing and better equipment and time that was used, is the 8-string tension.
On the original, they used downtuned 7 strings, which ended up having a bit of a low tension. On this one, they can afford to use a higher tension, meaning the notes sound more piercing.

And i totally hope i'm not saying a bunch of crap, cause then i'll be all like "YEAH i rule at listening to a guitar and saying it has stronger tension"

or something like that :P

Yeah, you're sort of right.

Not many people know about the original Nothing being recorded on 7 strings. The tension issue wasn't because of tuning down though; they struing them up as if they were the 8 strings without the high E but the tension issue came into it because the scale length was not appropriate for such low strings.

So basically the strings were too tense because they didn't have that extra few inches of neck. The 8 strings sound a lot fuller and more powerful as a result of their gigantic size. I don't even know how Meshuggah can play those fuckin things, they're apparently twenty five percent larger than a standard guitar! Yipes!

Holy smokes Batman, that is huge! But nothing suprises me anymore when it comes to the 'Shuggahs. Off to the record store now, hopefully they'll have it in by now...Can't wait to hear it.
