Your Very First Favourite Band

Alright, now take a deep breath, forget the world around you and go back into the past… Into a time, when children still knew what a „cassette“ was, Twix was still called Raider and the Beatles hadn’t broken up... Wait, forget about the last one (maybe except for you, Coma  ) ...and try to remember the first band or the first solo musician, that you really admired.

As far as I’m concerned, I was about three, four or five years old, I was still in kindergarden, and I constantly forced my mother to play the video tape of a The Who concert which was filmed by the German show Rockpalast (which still exists, by the way). I remember that the sound was quite heavy compared to their albums, especially the guitar – and so I always found myself air-guitaring along with Pete Townshend’s (strange to write that name with an h) riffs and solos. Yeah, that experience made them my first favourite band, I think.

Now it’s your turn to admit your dark secrets. Spice Girls anyone?

The first three bands I can ever remember liking were 2 Unlimited, C&C Music Factory, and Papa Roach.
LAUGH AWAY PEOPLE. :D

'Course, it was all over when my brother played me an mp3 he found of Ministry's TVII... CONNECT THE GODDAMN DOTS! That and Burning Inside were the first songs of their kind I remember hearing, though I find it extremely difficult to remember the order of events in my life (stuck a key in an outlet when I was really young and survived... maybe that has something to do with it ), so there may have been something before that. I do remember one song that I really liked, though-- I'm not sure what it was called, I think maybe Space Man... I vaguely remember the lyrics going something like "There's a fire between us, so where is your god, there's a fire between us (I can't get off the carousel I can't get off this world)" and then the chorus was this weird sped-up filtered voice going "Spaaaaace maaaaan" ...But I have no idea who it was by. Found it on an old mix tape my then-stepdad had in a box.

EDIT: Space Man by Babylon Zoo. That's it.

Heh, me too. They were immensely popular when I was still young enough to be influenced by people around me. Dutch, too!

SOme of my earliest memories of music are listening to Stone Temple Pilots - Core and Metallica Black Album CDs courtesy of my dad and brother....

However as far the first CDs I bought ... Probably Green Day and Presidents of the USA.

Probably Rammstein...yeah. Not the first band that I got into but probably the first that I followed. Definately the first big gig I ever went to.

I can remember thinking that they were the heaviest thing possible...! Which in retrospect maybe isn't totally insane as they are pretty loud. Certainly one of the best shows I have ever seen.

Then soon after that I found SYL...thanks to my older brothers. I think I must have skipped a whole lot of crap music thanks to them!

1993, Manowar crossed my musical ear and I was "blown" away from this song I heard. I still can't remember which song it was. (starts with running horses and "bashing swords")

I would consider this as my first real thought about music or a band which I should follow. (I didn't *cough* )

By the way in the age of 14, I was scared by an sticker of Kreator. Holy Moly, these guy's are sick, was what I was thinking.

Any ideas which Manowar song I could have heard? I searched on their homepage but when I looked at their Disco, I thought "Fook" - "thats too much". :?

Since you understand my language, dear neighbour from the Netherlands:

"Raider heisst jetzt Twix - sonst ändert sich nix!"

That was the slogan for the advertisments promoting the name change. Makes me wonder why they changed the name anyway, but hey... A classic line and source of so many bad jokes, so who cares.

And I remember 2Unlimited. Although for me things started with The Who, I was more into top40 stuff during the next years, if I remember correctly. Hell, does anyone remember Dr. Alban? He was really big in some european countries during the early 90s, I think. This thread brings up some memories I could repress for so long...

This was "True Dance" :)

I started listening to music when i was about 10 years old, in 1992, and i got caught in the dance wagon! I don't think i had any favorite band because they were almost all sounding the same

Haha. Right.

Kylie Minogue. "Do the lo do the lo do the lo the locomotion with meeee". Gladly.
While listening to that tape, I was either playing with Lego cubes or sketching the figures from Masters of the Universe.

Roxette. "I'm gonna get dressed, for success". Where are those clothes anyway?
"Listen to Your Heart" was the first love song that touched me.

Michael Jackson. "I'm bad". Oh yes you are.
I learned the "Dirty Diana" lyrics to be cool but this kid in my school could dance like Michael throughout. I'm serious, he had the moves down, so my coolness was degraded into tepidity.

Anyone remembers The Super Channel? Peter's Pop Show? That was my first experience with music videos. I distinctly remember Huey Lewis and the News "Stuck with you" vid, and some Madonna ones and the likes.

Ach, memoirs. *leans back and closes eyes*

EDIT: the softness of this post is compensated with the fact that this is my 666-th post.
