Would anyone be able to verify whether or not that first section of the clip was sped up or not?... because that is just insanely fast. Like, the fastest shred I have ever seen.

That was sped up, no doubt, I have the original. He plays that lick at 200 bpm, than goes to 216 and breaks and then nails it on 208 (about pushing your limits).

Yeah, I've actually seen both of those videos.
That Fareri dude is amazing, but he's a very tasteless player and pretty much a complete tool in my opinion. As is Rusty Cooley and that Michael Angelo guy, although I think he's the least bad of the three.
They all have amazing chops, but I still consider Petrucci to be a better player.

Agreed on Fareri and Cooley, there's no musical taste whatsoever, it's just "now I'm gonna do this three octave run *oh I'm already done* now this series of arpeggios *oops done already* now up ag*aha* now for the next second let's ..." But I would rank Angelo closer to Petrucci (still miles apart though) than to those two. Angelo is educated and you can hear in his music he knows what he's doing and communicates some soul through his compositions. Did you know Tom Morello of RATM was Angelo's student?

What follows is my opinion only: Technique for it's own sake is not art. What techinique does is allow you to express your art with more "colors", but it should never be the end result of learning guitar. I know a lot of "haters" who would say, "That's just 'cause you can't play that fast." True, but when people hear me play, they know EXACTLY what emotion or thought I am trying to convey. And it isn't "Look at me".

So what you're trying to say is that you're awesome, right? Also I do agree. Technique is more a commodity than anything else.
