yes, the RED HOT chili peppers. Oh my gosh they ripped off a Tom Petty tune!
Check it out:

I hope they get sued. Can't stand em... Mostly cause of the whole Mike Patton/Kiedis thing.

They ripped off a friend of mine. I haven't heard anyone yet tell me that they've liked their new album. I tried to get into it, and I can't get into it myself.
As for that Patton/Kiedis thing, Kiedis showed his true colors there, and they aren't pretty.
It's such a shame from a band that up through 1991 or so was laying out such great material.

I actually think they've released some decent stuff... Especially the older stuff - just like any other band that was good at one point or another.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, certainly, but I have to say that despite how others may act in the band, John Frusciante is one of the most pure and talented guitarists and singers on the planet, period. Without him, RHCP would never have discovered: melody, harmony, hook, feel or creative song structures. Yes, Flea is a badass bassist. Yes, Chad is one wicked drummer. Without John, the mangled mess that is RHCP would have no focus and worse, nothing to say.
Again, just my opinion.

Pffft! Stadium Arcadium is a great album! Both CDs, 28 songs, not a single bad track.
This notion of them ripping off Tom Petty is retarded. Does RHCP really need to rip off Tom Petty?? The album is rife with hit songs! Bands constantly write similar things. Musically the two tracks don't sound the same, they're similar. Moreover, what makes you think RHCP even like Tom Petty? Even know that song enough to KNOW they're stealing it.
System Of A Down's "Marmalade" sounds like "Hangin' On The Telephone." Did they rip of Blondie? Someone is making something out of nothing here.

What's the Patton/Keidis thing?

Oh really? then why did the drums and bass line up when they were played together? Identical chord progression, too. And Marmalade also wasnt on any SoaD album, let alone a hit single. Both the Tom Petty and RHCP songs are hits
I also think that it doesn't matter if they know the song or not. They're ripping it off either way.
Patton/Kiedis thing... Basically Kiedis accused Patton of stealing his style of rapping in a funk metal band. Patton didn't take too kindly to it, and Mr Bungle made joking comments about how they will hurt him and played some god-awful RHCP covers on stage to mock him. Then when Bungle was going to release the album "California", it was pushed back a year because RHCP's "Californication" was coming out the same year and the titles were similar. Mr Bungle wasn't too happy about that, obviously. Then Mr Bungle got into some pretty big festivals in Europe, and the headlining act was RHCP. Kiedis threatened to pull his band from the bill if Mr Bungle played, so Mr Bungle was dropped from three of the shows they were scheduled to appear on. I think that covers it.

Interesting...I had no idea. I was sorta into RHCP a few years ago (haven't really listened to them much recently though), but my respect for them (or at least Kiedis) has dropped a few notches after reading that.

Yeah, it's all Kiedis. Here's a quote I found from the Bungle guitarist, Trey Spruance:
"We were booked, months in advance, to do eleven festival dates in Europe. Come Summer, we get a call from the three biggest of those festivals, all of them the same day, saying that we can't play, because the headlining band retains the right to hire and fire whomever they wish. We found out it was the Red Hot Chili Peppers, so our manager called their manager to find out what the hell was going on, and their manager was very apologetic, and said, 'We're really sorry, we want you to know this doesn't reflect the management's position, or the band's for that matter, it's Anthony Kiedis who wants this.'" -- Trey Spruance
And in case I have to post the link where I got the quote from:

How can you rip a song off if you don't know it?
Sounds like a coincidence in that case.
Not that I'm a big RHCP fan, in fact I end up getting a bit sick of them when their albums come out as they seem to be everywhere.
No denying that they sound very similar. Maybe not the vocal melodies but the guiter, bass, drums are. Intentional or not I think it ends up being the same song, especially when they were layered on top of each other.

I have to admit, as much of a chili peppers fan as I am I truly did not appreciate the patton/kiedis saga and have not been a fan of kiedis since. At the same time, I've seen that Bungle show where they took a stab at the chili peppers and while I laughed at most of it I didn't think the cracks at Hillel were funny.
I thought I wasn't going to like the new chili peppers particularly because I thought Dani California is their weakest single to date. However, after listening to the album I really do dig it.
Also, at the end of the day, we can't forget or ignore how awesome Flea is.
