I suggest avoiding all products. Dreadlocks are knots that form naturally in people with wavy/curly hair. They are not beeswax, or oil, or filth:P If you go to an African Braiding salon, they can knot your hair up until it gets to the point where it will dread on it's own, especially if you sleep on it while it's matted.

The product to use is salt and water, instead of shampoo. That way, your hair will lose it's bad smell, but it doesn't de-grease so you'll get nice dreads. Dreadlocks are naturally formed, as Hughie said. Just don't wash it with shampoo and don't comb/brush your hair and you should be fine.

Haha naturally formed dreadlocks? You mean a lump of matted hair right? I'd be using something to get it looking right if I were you, everyone I've met with 'natural' dreadlocks has one big painful lump of hair.

Dunno...
Sometimes my hair feels like they're dreadlocks, sometimes not...
One time, it took me 3½ hours to straighten out my hair back after they had become a BIIIIG lump of hair!
I'm too lazy to brush my hair, hehe!

I use castile soap to wash my scalp, and cool water to wash my hair and it never smells:) As a side note, I also use castile soap as full body soap too! Anyway.. just because you're not getting dreadlocks the suburb style via wax and stuff doesn't mean it has to be one big dread or a big matte. You can still pull apart the dreads from one another to keep them seperate when they're forming early on!

Curling iron? You know, the opposite of the hair straightener.

Backcombing and wax. Backcomb until your hairs as big and frizzy as possible, and then you twist and knot and rub wax in and make little dreaddies. Google it for some real techniques and details. I'm against fashion dreads, but that's because I'm an elitist jerk.
Good luck, take before/after pictures!!

I wash my dreadlocks with shampoo at least once every week.
I suggest avoiding all products.

asked my friend who has dread and she said to wash my hair with a bar of hand soap for about a month so it dries out then backcomb it with a fork (or some sort of metal comb) and then roll the knots and such into dreads, hopefully itll work imma try it soon
