Just be careful. My father got this call from one of his nieces. She had upgraded to broadband, but seemed to be running at about the same rate as dialup. He went over, took one look at the wireless router, and promptly shut down every comp my cousin thought was on her network. The bandwith consumption remained constant right up until he configured some security measures, at which point he saw the same IP trying to reconnect a few hundred times in rapid succession.
Stuff like that could plausibly lead to some thorny legal issues. It's your connection downloading all the warez, spreading the illicit pictures of nuns with jackals, and posting about irrational fears of gangrape on the Opeth forum.
My own network's passworded up the wazoo and requires administrator intervention to grant each specific comp access. My wife finds it annoying but the first thing one of our neighbors ever said to me was "HI" while waving to show that she had a laptop. So between that dumbass and the hospital around the corner, I figure I might bleed some serious bandwith with anything less secure.

Depends on how evil your neighbors are.
Securing your data is always important, and with wireless networking a bit more important because the connection is always out there and not just available through a cable.
Once that's sorted out, wireless is great. You can pick up your computer and sit down anywhere without all the fucking wires around. I love it.
I am on the toilet as we speak.

Yeah, I've heard of people who sit outside houses, hacking into the wireless broadband very easily. Ain't pretty.

For your info: )( means unsecured wireless network, () means secured wireless network. In case you ever see suck signs chalked onto walls or pavements. Hopefully, not your own.

I don't do wireless, but this page has information on computer security, specifically in the Shields Up section. Maybe start here. If nothing else, you can test the firewall on your computer. I'm stealthed!

Enable WEP encryption (or even better, WPA if your router supports that) and limit access to your computers MAC addresses only. That should do the trick.

tis always grand when a chap rubs his technological superiority on the face of one whose computer turned 9 yrs old some weeks ago
