Okay, so I just completed revising my rough draft for a paper I'm doing on Thelonious Monk. One of the things I'm emphasizing on it is his creativity. Anyway, part of that included me talking about his use of his left hand while he played the piano, which at the time was not a very common thing, as most pianists used mainly their right hand while using the left hand sparingly, Thelonious Monk used both hands nearly equally. What my paper said was:

"Also, most of the musicians at the time were known for using their left hand much less than they used their right hand, but in the case of Thelonious Monk, he used both of his hands pretty much equally. He truly had a completely different style than all of the other jazz musicians at the time."

Around the middle of that passage, my teacher, who is a pretty cool guy, and pretty funny now too wrote, "Please don't leave this to the imagination! Explain what you mean."

I thought about that for a second and burst out laughing.

As far as I'm concerned, I'll continue to mainly use my right hand. It just suits my... piano playing (ahem) fine.

The polirhythms made that one!

Anyway, I talked to my teacher about it today and we had a good laugh. He's a younger guy, plays bass in a jazz combo that plays around the area, nice guy too.
