Awesome band, but beware, once you hit Elegy—and the albums released previous to that—they get more and more death metallish. They're all amazing albums, Elegy is stunning, quite honestly, but they definitely mellowed out after that album. They just got steadily mellower as time went on, a natural progression it appeared.

The Privilege Of Evil EP is full on death metal, though. I believe it is now package with The Karelian Isthmus. Anyway, their earlier stuff rules, it's just on a different musical level. I guess it would be somewhat accurate to say that if you made Am Universum heavier and mixed in some death metal vocals it should give you a fairly accurate idea of what the band sounded like on those earlier albums. You could also check out the album Chapters, that's a collection album with some old songs on it.

Best bet is to just listen, though. =)

One of the few metal bands that I really like, although as stated, they sorta turned into less of a metal band and more of a prog band after a while.

Elegy is clearly the best, then Am Universum imo.... Tales from the Thousand Lakes is pretty cool as well. While I don't rate their death metal as highly as their psych/prog, they certainly do it damn well. The Karellian Isthmus has some damn fine death moments, particularly "Pilgrimage".

Have you all heard that Pasi Koskinen isn't in the band any more? And we never got a tour down here in Australia! How rude...

Of the newer proggy stuff, I really love Far From The Sun. Am Universum and Tuonela probably coming next.

Christ, I always thought 'Amorphis' was a black metal band....but these guys actually sound quite interesting!

No offense to black metal....I just really dont like it.

Really? Even on their earlier stuff, they're not even close to black metal. Well, the Privilege Of Evil EP is full-on death metal, but that was intentional, still not black metal, though. I believe their first 7" EP is pretty raw, too, but it's been like 10 years since I've listened to it.

The name alone made me think of black metal for some reason, as I haven't heard any of this music. Foolish, I know!

They did the same thing The Gathering did, evolve into something completely different, but still somehow keep that magic they had before, you know? I think the key to that is being honest with yourself as a musician, clearly Amorphis and The Gathering evolved in a way that was natural and not forced! Anathema have done it, Katatonia come to mind. Then there are those other bands that try something new and fail miserably and usually they can never re-create what they did previous to their change.

Amorphis are worth your time.
