To be pedantic, Metallica are most probably classed, or were classed as, 'thrash metal' which by definition is a sub-genre of the greater beast that is 'heavy metal'.... so technically they play a variant of metal.

Admittedly shit metal at the moment.

I agree with you on the point about James Hetfield... considering he's supposed to be this "almighty" "legendary" etc, vocalist, he sounds like nothing at all interesting / special to me.,

I mean there's vocalists out there that don't on their own sound interesting or special, but then when you put their vocal style to the type of music their band plays, it works as it's virtually a contrasting style to the crunch of the riffs... ie Warrel Dane and Nevermore.

Metallica stopped being trash after And Justice for All, and stopped being Metal after the Black Album.

In my personal, honest and freely gotten opinion, Metallica were one of the best things to happen to metal. I chose MoP as my pick, but RTL comes a very close second. Justice suffered from poor production, but is still a great album. Black was the turning point - the point where they became MTV's little darlings. A good album? Yeah, but not a great album.

Now, I have to say... I'm almost embarrassed to tell you this... I like Load. It's not their best album, and I freely believe that it's a sell-out album. But for some reason, there's a few tracks on it that appeal to me. Re-Load, however, is poo. And Garage Inc. is other people's stuff anyway.

S&M was a great album to me. Ktulu, Battery, Bellz, One, all kick ass. Evn Hero was good. But St. Anger? TOILET FODDER! I WASTED £14.99 ON THAT WORTHLESS FUCKING DOUGHNUT! Sorry, I needed to vent there. Where was I? Oh yes. I personally think St. Anger is the worst album Metallica have ever done.

Metallica became accessible for the black album, and sold out completely for the Load era. And this sorry attempt at a return to form is a very poor disguise for metal's greatest tragedy.

IN MY OPINION.

I still like Metallica. St. Anger would have been a good album if it hadn't had been Metallica that had made it.

Load and Re-load are good but only if your like the odd bit of countryesk music.

Everything before black was fan-fucking-tasic.

I can't relate to everyone's hate toward Metallica...

They got me first into real metal and without that first step I would have never delved as deep into the genre as I have.

I openly LOVE everything they have done, Kill em All to St. Anger.

Yeah you heard me right.

I LIKE ST. ANGER.

I don't give a shit if you think differently, I like it. Quit bitching if you don't like it. Just don't listen.

Metallica is one of the most influential bands of all time, 2nd only to Black Sabbath in metal.

Metallica and Meshuggah - so different. Nothing to compare! (shakes head)...in fact...Meshuggah praise Metallica and contradictions collapse and none are blatant rip-offs of vocal ideas and solos from RTL and MOP...

Chris..

ps..even Meshuggah go on about how much they are obsessed with them....
