well, there are traditional Opeth songs, some that could have been on Damnation too, and stuff that they've never done before. I don't know...you just gotta hear it! So basically I'd say 50% AAAAARGH and 50% lalalala.
It's actually a very varied cd and has a lot of mellow moments. The mellow moments don't actually contain a lot of acoustics, they are more poppy with a standard bassline and keys. TGC is probably the worst on the album and the least experimental.
"Ghost Of Perdition" is an awesome opener and one of the more traditional Opeth songs, great opening to the album
"Baying Of The Hounds" starts of with a heavy section similar to "Funeral Portrait" and quietens down for a bit. Very epic chord progression about half way in. Lots of weirdish mellow stuff at the end.
"Beneath The Mire" is a bit of a weird one, lets of keys, very diverse and packed full of riffs. A bit of a mess on first listen, this one hasn't really sunk in.
"Atonement" is a VERY upbeat song and like nothing Opeth have done before. Very strange to hear something like this from the band.
"Reverie/Harlequin Forest"- Best song on the album, sounds like something off Morningrise but with heavier sections and a great flow. a "To Bid You Farewell" like section towards the middle. chuggah chuggah at the end which sounds out of place.
"Hours of Wealth" is totally mellow song with great keyboards, fresher than Damnation, typical Mikael solo at the end.
"The Grand Conjuration" - I don't know if I like or hate this song, I actually preffered the time changes in the shit rip where it kept skipping.
"Isolation years" is a very nice ending to the album, another mellow number.

I cannot say enough how happy I am with this record. It makes Deliverence and Damnation seem very boring. Combined, even. It has all the subtelty and beauty that was missing from Damnation and has the harmonic brilliance that was lacking in Deliverence.
I always expect the best from Meshuggah so I knew Catch 33 would rule but I did not expect this to be so damn good. I can't wait to hear this shit live... I hope they skip all their old material and just play this album from start to finish.

I second that. Hallelujah!
This time they have really outdone themselves.
Can't wait to see the guys live in September.

This may have just jumped to the top of the 2005 list... very different to what I've ever heard from them before. Let's wait for the sellout chant to begin from the metalheads...

I still feel guilty for having heard it before it's release. But it was worth it because this album is so incredible.

As with Alien and Catch33...I am going to play the waiting game here, and I'm gonna win!
Though you guys are making it harder, heh.
