Oh, please! If there is musical depth in rap I just totally fail to see it, so I just guess it simply isn't there. When you've heard one rap song you've heard 'em all.

Please prove me wrong by showing me a rap song with musical geniousness.

Greg Reason had a good list. Paul's Boutique by the Beastie Boys is also worth checking out, and of course there is also the Fugees' "The Score" and mostly anything by Outkast.

I'll always have a special place in my heart for KoRn. I think they're the band that started me on my course to find good experimental music. it was mostly because of the "alien" sounding riffs/noises/vocals they always employed in their music. nowadays, i dig experimental music more than anything, so yeah thank you Korn!

obviously no one is getting in the merit of Rap being MUSICALLY notable, after all rap is about lyrics, and not music.

EXACTLY, which is why it cannot be compared to music in the first place. It's a looped beat with a semblance of musical ambience and a long, drawn-out voice-over, usually, but not always, in sync with the beat. Furthermore, I don't CARE what rappers have to say. In fact, I hate overly wordy and pedantic artists no matter what genre they're in, which is why I can't stand Rage Against The Machine or System Of A Down. I don't give a fuck about your views on politics. I want to leave reailty for a while, not have my face shoved ear-deep in it.

that's like saying punk is about the lyrics, and not the music.

or classical guitar is about how much the guy can show off with his guitar, but not about the music.

Dälek is pretty much about music, it's even easy to overlook the lyrics (which are great btw) because of their wall of sound

That may be true, but similarly, other people wil equaly say they "don't give a f**k about the merits of the music you like". We all listen to different music for different things and if all music played the same role, then life would be pretty boring wouldn't it?

I can't say I'm a fan of rap (though again, I can't say I've explored it fully. However, just because it's not my preference, doesn't make it inferior to anything else, particularly not mainstream metal. As for the original viewpoint on the simplicity of hte lyrics, I don't see that as a bad thing. There has always been music that has fulfilled that role in providing a simple means of identification for people, and it hasn't always been rap songs. And even without that, sometimes I think that simplicity can say things well, as long as it's done intelligently, with clever lyrical devices, then it's completely valid.

But ultimately, I can't say that any genre of music bothers me. If I don't like it, I don't listen to it. If it means something to someoen else, then good for them. I can never understand why people tend to get so angry about these things.

Plenty of people fail to see the musical depth in (death) metal.

actually no. If you look at the very ethimology of the word RAP, you can see it's a different concept: RAP = Rythm And Poetry. The origins are those, a beat and a message. That's what i meant, they weren't there to make music per-se, but to deliver a message of something by making poetry in their way.

@A-Damage: that's what we call "taste":D
you are very very free not to listen to it, as i don't. I also agree theres absolutely no way of comparing rap with metal, for example, because they're worlds apart, the only striking similarity is that they both end up on albums :P

There are alot of Dj Shadow tracks that don't have any lyrics at all but its still hip hop music. Turntablism is another popular form of hip hop which isn't focused on lyrics.

Just like metal there is a wide variety in the genre as a whole.
