now that can be taken in a number of ways.

"His solos on that album are so fucking tasteless and stupid that I don't know why he even bothered"

"DT have gotten even worse, that last piece of crap they released was an utter dissapointment except for Vacant"

...who has gall?

How can cheese be a matter of opinion? Maybe the varying degrees of cheese, but not the fact that cheese is cheese. DT are just about the cheesiest band I've ever heard. Now don't get me wrong, I used to think that they were the greatest fucking thing I'd heard in ages.... But you CANNOT DENY how fucking cheesy they are! They are Kings of Cheese!!! I used to not let that bother me.... now I can't take it.

OK so I may have gall also, but for fuck's sake.... Just listen to those solos! He used to be a melodic player of some decency (the solos from the song Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence were gorgeous!) but on Train of Thought he regressed to being a boring show off. You may as well listen to Malmsteen or some shit, at least he varies his shredding a little.

I say Train of Thought was a dissapointment because it came after such a wonderful album. Six Degrees had so many new ideas, so much good stuff on it.... The song Six Degrees was a fucking great concept piece... It had so much going for it, then they went and did Train of Thought............

I can see how someone would like Train if it is the first DT thing they have ever heard.... But I would recommend Scenes From a Memory and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence above and beyond anything else. They may do carbon copy sections of other artists in Scenes (Yes, Zappa, Pink Floyd) but it is their most creative and varied.

Train of Thought was meant to be that way. The guys have said it themselves. Although Six Degrees had more depth and was better received by the fans, just keep in mind that they are doing what they want. Everything they touch and play is sponsored and their live show is unmatched. Sure Train of Thought was a wankfest...but if you had a Ferrari, would you not want to take it out for a day and just go fast?

LTE 1,2 were wanks, Petrucci's Suspended Animation is looking to be a wank album, but lets see what Octavarium has to offer.

Just to sum up how cheesy they are, they've made a song about the moral implications of gene technology.

Break any song down into one sentence and it'll seem stupid.

Dev has a song about pregnancy on Alien.

Dream Theater to me are bloody good musicians, who unfortunately also think they are very deep and thoughtful. Some of their lyrics are wonderfully cheesey, but some are pretty good, and a little more abstract. My main reason for listening to them is the the tunes rather than the lyrics. I tend not to listen too lyrics much anyway.

I have not listened to much Dream Theatre at all. My friend keeps on telling me to listen to them, but I have heard As I Am on Train of Thought and I liked it, had a nice groove to it :) Oh and I'm new, hey all

Images and Words is the best DT album i have heard. I don`t really listen to DT very much these days...That kind of music gets old very fast imo.

i got into dream theater after hearing the first liquid tension experiment record.

6doit - very disappointing.

train of thought was what i voted for, as i feel it is their most 'solid' album. it took me by surprise - i thought that that they'd just go down the slippery slope after 6doit.

octavarium could tip the balance toward me not liking them so much any more. :(

But then again you might love it!

6DOIT is a funny album, because I really don't like the 1st CD, but the 2nd one is one of my favourite CDs. I love the dreamy feel to some of the songs, and it fills my head with images far better than any of the other albums. Even Scenes is just music to me - there is no imagery with it. And some of the progressions are amazing. Plus James sang quite well.

Train is a really solid album - it feels like a monolith. My big problem with it is that there are hardly any keyboards of note. The occasional solo and a little bit of piano, but nothing atmospheric.

Ah, which is ironic because most fans were complaining openly that they were using too much keyboard with previous albums...mainly SFAM and 6DOIT. So they went in a different direction with Train Of Thought; heavier album and less keyboard in the mix.

6DOIT is probably my least favorite DT album. There are only a couple songs off Disc 1 that I like, but I'm pretty fond of Disc 2, which is actually one big 40+minute song. Can't say I listen to it much though.

Dream Theater albums aside, they put on a KILLER show. Jaw-dropping. I can watch Petrucci and Portnoy play all night. Petrucci may have been showing off his shredding abililties with TOT, but he writes some of the best guitar solos I've ever heard. I find that most people who have problems with Petrucci's shredding on TOT also haven't listened to the rest of their catalog.

Heh, for me it's just the opposite. I find the second disc somewhat boring (except for War Inside My Head), while the first disc is one of their best efforts to me :)

I like the lyrical concept of disc 2 though.

Maybe it is six degrees of inner cheese? Anyhoo, Scenes from a memory absolutely blew. I mean blew so hard it gave the whole band hemorroids.

I HATE that album. I mean what the hell, if I wanted to read a freekin novel, I'd read...a...novel. Yeah.

I&W and Awake was their best stuff, hands down. YES I agree with you Greg, this band is definitely cheesy. I used to love them, but I have a problem with a band that you can't listen to in a convertible really loud. I mean if you turn up any DT album and drive around town, people will think when they hear LaBrie's swinelike squeal that you are either gay or gay and stuck in 1986.

They are all great musicians, but soulless...

Finally, yes I am almost done, DT totally ripped off COC. Listen to These shrouded temples from the Blind album and then As I Am from train. HMMM. Makes you think a bit.

once upon a time i was a DT fan. ive got all their albums, 6DOIT being their best for me by far. the title track is probably my favourite song they ever did. Awake and Tran Of Thought come in next 2 places. the rest can sort themselves out.

i used to worship them alot - but i dont know what happened, but i just became bored of them. im eagerly awaiting the new album but im really curious that since i dont listen to them now - will that impact my liking of the new one, we'll see - but i hope its good.
