Interesting thread.
Some of my earliest memories revolve around travelling Europe with my dad listening to tonnes of classic rock (Whitesnake, Kate Bush, Cream, Genesis, Uriah Heep, Rush and Pink Floyd- the latter two I still adore and listen to heavily to this day). When I started primary school, I had one of those little Sony cassette walkmans in which had 'Floyd's 'The Wall' and Bon Jovi's 'These Days' on constant repeat during breaktimes.
I think I was about 10 when I started to realise and acknowledge other genres. Pretty much listened to anything; random dance tracks, Hanson (oh yes), Hispanic and Latino folk and pop music etc until I reached my early teens, which I think is where the journey began, so to speak. At 14ish Korn, Eminem, In Flames and Fear Factory immediately jumped at me at the start of they typical teenage musical rebellion against my parents before I got into the UK Skate scene, as well as my friends at the time. Which is where Grunge, Ska and old and 'nu'-punk reached my ears (Less Than Jake, Nirvana, Green Day,the Offspring, Quicksand, Reel Big Fish, the Sex Pistols, Backyard Babies, the Buzzcocks and X-Ray Spex were heavily played) and my first proper gig was Reel Big Fish and Goldfinger at Leeds Met Uni.
During my mid-teens I first heard Metallica and Megadeth, and started attending gigs and befriending bands in the local music scene. Just prior to this, thanks to label sample CD's from magazines- Kerrang! (back when it was still worth buying), Metal Hammer, Rock Sound, Terrorizer etc, I started actively listening and discovering more metal and I remember vividly the first time I heard a death metal track (Cannibal Corpse- 'Pit of Zombies', I think) and being absolutely terrified. But curiosity got the better of me and after trying a few more bands I found I really fucking loved it. Black metal (Satyricon, CoF etc), Game soundtracks and remixes, Power Metal (Skyfire, Celesty etc) and Prog (Dream Theater, Ayreon etc) followed during college.
I found Dev really late on. At 18 it was two years since I'd moved out and got my first job and still collected label CD's, one of which had 'Relentless' on it (My initial reaction was 'the fuck was that?!'

) and a few days later went out and bought 'Alien' which upon first listen became the second time I have been completely terrified by music, fucking loved it after a while and bought the discography. After a little research I found DTB and bought Ocean Machine, then the discography. Both bands were on constant repeat into my 20's.
Now at 23, I listen to a huge mishmash of these bands and genres. Though prog, rock and metal are my genres of choice, I'll give almost anything a listen.
