I don't consider Kiss or Def Leppard metal, but...I could go on and on anyhow....

Other than the KISS, I'm soo into your music collection. And, "Edge of the Blade" is one of my favorite songs to play on guitar. Still.

Interesting thread.

Some of my earliest memories revolve around travelling Europe with my dad listening to tonnes of classic rock (Whitesnake, Kate Bush, Cream, Genesis, Uriah Heep, Rush and Pink Floyd- the latter two I still adore and listen to heavily to this day). When I started primary school, I had one of those little Sony cassette walkmans in which had 'Floyd's 'The Wall' and Bon Jovi's 'These Days' on constant repeat during breaktimes.

I think I was about 10 when I started to realise and acknowledge other genres. Pretty much listened to anything; random dance tracks, Hanson (oh yes), Hispanic and Latino folk and pop music etc until I reached my early teens, which I think is where the journey began, so to speak. At 14ish Korn, Eminem, In Flames and Fear Factory immediately jumped at me at the start of they typical teenage musical rebellion against my parents before I got into the UK Skate scene, as well as my friends at the time. Which is where Grunge, Ska and old and 'nu'-punk reached my ears (Less Than Jake, Nirvana, Green Day,the Offspring, Quicksand, Reel Big Fish, the Sex Pistols, Backyard Babies, the Buzzcocks and X-Ray Spex were heavily played) and my first proper gig was Reel Big Fish and Goldfinger at Leeds Met Uni. :)

During my mid-teens I first heard Metallica and Megadeth, and started attending gigs and befriending bands in the local music scene. Just prior to this, thanks to label sample CD's from magazines- Kerrang! (back when it was still worth buying), Metal Hammer, Rock Sound, Terrorizer etc, I started actively listening and discovering more metal and I remember vividly the first time I heard a death metal track (Cannibal Corpse- 'Pit of Zombies', I think) and being absolutely terrified. But curiosity got the better of me and after trying a few more bands I found I really fucking loved it. Black metal (Satyricon, CoF etc), Game soundtracks and remixes, Power Metal (Skyfire, Celesty etc) and Prog (Dream Theater, Ayreon etc) followed during college.

I found Dev really late on. At 18 it was two years since I'd moved out and got my first job and still collected label CD's, one of which had 'Relentless' on it (My initial reaction was 'the fuck was that?!' :P ) and a few days later went out and bought 'Alien' which upon first listen became the second time I have been completely terrified by music, fucking loved it after a while and bought the discography. After a little research I found DTB and bought Ocean Machine, then the discography. Both bands were on constant repeat into my 20's.

Now at 23, I listen to a huge mishmash of these bands and genres. Though prog, rock and metal are my genres of choice, I'll give almost anything a listen. 8)

The first thing I remember hearing what Beethoven when I was around eight years old. I would honestly sit around, reading Terry Pratchett books and listening to classical music. At about nine and a half years old I heard my first Led Zeppelin song; Achille's Last Stand. At that moment in time I fell in love with John Bonham's playing and would continuously make noise on everything around me until my parents bought me a drum kit. I then proceeded to make more noise, break drum sticks, and learn music.

Still before I got into metal, I was listeing to funk, jazz, blues, some rock stuff (but really not all that much) and then, by the tender age of seventeen, I heard Dev! Yay! Strapping Young Lad was, as it so happens, my first metal experience.

Yay lame stories.

Jeez. No wonder most of you have to pretend to be into so much obscure unlistenable shit these days. Trying to counterbalance your MOR/Eurotechno pasts. Huey Lewis... Phil Collins... 2 Unlimited...

This is the best thread ever. No newbie on the forum need ever feel musically intimidated again.

No, of course not. You're way too suave for that. I don't believe Biert listens to half the shit he pretends to either. In fact I am pretty sure he makes a good percentage of it up, secure in the knowledge no-one will dare risk looking uncool by calling him on it.

I'm not sure anyone listens to 90% of Black Metal except people in other Black Metal bands.

I pretty much grew up on the metal, my dad being a mediocre thrash guitar guy and all, and if there was youtube circa 1989 there'd be plenty of footage of me running around and singing No One Like You by the Scorpions.

I was definitely fond of the music scene around 1992ish or so though, because I definitely have a bunch of Seattle grunge, Blood Sugar Sex Magik by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and that sorta stuff. My cousins were punkers in a band, so I have a lot of 90s underground punk shit, and I definitely have most of the replacements' back catalogue. Lots of Dio, since my parents loved him...

Lots of late 70s and early 80s rock. Lots of funk and reggae (my mom smoked quite a bit of weed.)

Seriously, the transition from Thin Lizzy and Boston to Maiden was pretty much seamless for me. I got into heavier shit in my teen years, mostly In Flames because of the song Bullet Ride and really just that entire Clayman album. If you were into 80s shit, and didn't really get the nu-metal scene, Clayman was a perfect album for that (how ironic that would all become with Soundtrack to Your Escape).

I dunno, I was just like, the metal kid of my group of nerds, and I was the nerd in the group of metal kids.

Honestly, I got into SYL because it was recommended to me by some of the other forums I go to. Found Dev's solo stuff my freshman year of college, pretty life changing, and here I am 4 1/2 years later.

My first influence was my dad - he had a stack of vinyl from bands like Led Zep, Deep Purple, Yes, Status Quo and Queen. Of those I really dug Queen and Deep Purple and would listen to them over and over and over. And still do to this day.

RIP two of the greatest singers of all time:

I tried to get my mum to buy me an Iron Maiden album for my birthday, and I kid you not she bought me a Wham! album instead. I then missed out on metal for a good decade. Thanks Mum!

Possibly as a result the biggest influence on me overall, I think, was the 80s and all those great melodies:

I then went a bit nutty for Van Halen, Faith No More and NIN (I guess that was my first "metal"ish experience) and hip hop like Eric B. & Rakim and Beastie Boys (with a brief daliance with grunge):

I got into seriously forgettable hip hop/metal bands like 311 and Downset, enjoyed a bit of ska ala Reel Big Fish, went a seriously loopy for Jeff Buckley and Radiohead before finding Fear Factory and realising that modern metal could be fucking amazing.

Still love the melodic stuff though and will still give any genre a try.

I got into metal at a fairly young age. Though it took a few years (5-6) to climb to where I am now. I still listen to most the music I listened to before I was headbanging. Our Lady Peace, Chantal Kreviazuk, Björk, etc. In fact Björk is one of my favorite artists out of all the genres I listen to. Go figure!
