I have no idea why ipods and their ilk have such huge capacity. A Sony Walkman and cassettes of Back in Black, Master of Puppets and Piece of Mind is all you need. If you have a friend to borrow Holy Diver and British Steel off, you're set for life.

I love you Billy, but Back in Black should be jettisoned into the sun.

Everything else is "true" about this.

Dont know which you've heard, but Alaska, Colors, and The Great Misdirect are everything but aimless wank. Even their original stuff was just very chaotic/grind-y stuff.

How many listens would it take to "get" Colors then? I'm at the start of the fourth song and so far I'm leaning towards agreeing with andjustinforall's opinion. I hear some interesting passages, but I'm not digging the concept of putting all that in one song - makes it seem aimless indeed. Also, I'm not a fan of the style of harsh vocals they apply.

Tried to watch their new video (it's over 9 minutes long, quite a feat for a music video) when it was posted on metalsucks, but gave up after couple of minutes. Listening to time singnatures changing all over the place is sort of tiring, I like to have some groove in music (that's probably why I don't listen to Dream Theater anymore). That's why I love djenty tunes, they're both technical and groovy :>

^^ count Chimp Spanner for good new bands (even if he's one man band), because he's great.

Well that's probably your problem, immediately picking apart the music instead of just listening to it. BTBAM is definitely a "niche" band, but their level of musicianship is astounding. If you can't hear that then I really don't know what to tell you...

I honestly think the thing that makes BTBAM great is their seamless transitions between passages and different styles thrown into a single track. I've never understood people who think "well this kind of music needs to ONLY be this way" (I'm referring to typical death metal fans who think bands like Opeth have always been trash because they dont just growl and tremolo pick a whole song)

I'm just listening to it, not picking apart anything. I'm just sharing my perceptions of what I'm hearing...

They're very proficient in playing their respective instruments, but the seamless transitions you hear appear hardly seamless to me. I'm very big on melodies and have no problem with different styles within one track, so in that sense BTBAM would be excellent for me. However, it's the transitions where they lose me as I prefer to be guided through a song a bit more 'gently', rather than being in a moshpit of great riffs.

Different strokes I suppose.

There's a big difference between music that sticks to a single style, and trying to put too much into a single song. Delicate balance.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Alaska and Colors, but not in the way I used to. After listening to it quite a lot, I too am getting the idea that it's wankery over musicianship. The Great Misdirect doesn't do anything for me at all, never sparked my interest. More of the same.

Add to this the fact that the singer is terrible (although I don't mind his harsh vocals, a lot of people don't dig them, and he can't sing clean for shit) and the fact that from what I've seen on youtube (never seen them live though) they're an incredibly boring band to watch, I kinda lost interest.

I've heard a lot of people say "They're a heavy version of Dream Theater" and I'm beginning to agree with that more and more. And that's not a compliment.

I'm going to go ahead and say it, they're definitely a "musicians band". Of course they're going to be "boring" to watch live, the stuff they're playing is outrageously difficult. That being said, look at Dillinger Escape Plan live

To each his own, I enjoy listening to them and many people I know dont. But I do agree with you, his hard vocals are better than his cleans.

just discovered Septic Flesh at a Behemoth show, Revolution DNA in particular I'd definately recommend to hardcore Devin fans:

Check out Germany's DISILLUSION if you don't know them already.

The first album (for me the best album EVER done) is a kind of mixture of Emperor, Meshuggah, Opeth with Anathema-esque bits which are probably the most superior references one can think of.
Listen to the best titletrack ever: Back To Times Of Splendor (snippet): http://www.myspace.com/disillusionofficial

Their second album "Gloria" is very unique and incomparable music-wise, it reminds a bit of industrial stuff with electronic elements, but still worth being entitled "metal". Not as great, huge, overwhelming as their debut, but still a 9.5/10.

Give'em a try.

Their singers' voice is not as great as Devin's (since he is not a classical singer as Mr Townsend is) but for me Disillusion's music on their first album "Back To Times Of Splendor" beats Devin's masterpieces easily.. I recommend you to read through the interesting lyrics of the story while listening.

Oh yes, I agree on the Disillusion thing :)

By the way, isn't it about time they made a new album? Gloria was from 2006.

Yeah, they're working on it. And it would be time for touring again, unfortunately they tour just Northern Germany in general. Except their short tour in Greece with Pain of Salvation and Aqua de Annique recently.
