It's because it's a sport that's fun to watch that we're underdogs in. America is never usually less than "a potential favorite" when it comes to the Olympics.
A lot of countries have us beat in a lot of events. Speed skating is dominated by the Koreans (minus Apolo Ohno) and curling was dominated by the Canadians. The Norwegians have been racking up medals in almost all skiing events.
It's also because our hockey team is loaded with the best pros we have to offer! haha
Well no duh, it's not like we win everything, I'm just saying that we usually are a contender in some capacity. In hockey, we're always an underdog.
You forget that 99.9% of pro hockey players (especially the top pros) are not from the US.
To be fair, I added a layer of opinion when I said sports that are fun to watch... (I really don't care about the biathlon)
And to be fair, if it wasn't for our absolute dominance in extreme sports (I know we don't win everything but it's pretty damn evident who's generally the leader when it comes to that stuff) we probably wouldn't even be in the top 3 of olympic medals.
