The keyboardist makes them a better band. Their shows are far cooler now, more dynamic and texturally diverse. Go listen to some scungey bm band if you want the raw shit.

keyboards and death metal don't go together, it makes them sound like a cheesy dream theater style prog band t_t

keyboard are just another instrument, wich you use in a good way or a bad way
opeth know what they are doing usually, and it can bring more dept to their music

i like the keys on a predator's portrait because they don't blaze out of nowhere and scream "LOOK WERE KEYBOARDS!!! WE MAKE THE MUSIC LAUGHABLE!!!" (I'll admit this worked on Dan Swano's Moontower and a few other albums). There are a few cases where keys are used well, but for every one of those there are like 5 bands who just sound plain silly. To me the synth style keyboards don't work for Opeth because they're a dark band, and synths clash with that =/

i totally just owned this threads train of thought

I agree that synth style keys wouldnt work for Opeth, but what I hear (on the last 3 albums anyway) sounds more 'organ-y', which I think totally suits Opeth.

Imagine the band playing in a disused church, with Per the keyboardist playing on the main organ, while the band swing their respective hairs in unison. This church is of course in a damp and decaying wood somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

Eeep.

Heard about this already...it's quite a bummer. I really liked Lopez a lot, and unfortunately I didn't get to see him with Opeth either of the two times I saw them live.

Axenrot is good, but not great. Oh well.

P.S. Per is a great addition to the band, and I think the keys sound awesome in Opeth.
