...and, fuck it: lock Lars in the basement and get Gene in on drums! I'm starting to really like this idea...

How about Byron could play bass? And get Jed to do some guitar-work? Hey, I know, let's just put the next Strapping album out and put Metallica's name on it. Blow everybody's mind right out the fucking door!

Now THAT is a cool idea! :D

I've always been a huge Metallica fan, and I think if you don't think they're the most influential metal band, then you're wrong. If you don't respect them at least for their immense contributions to metal (creating 5 of metal's BEST albums) then I don't know what to say to you.

I also enjoyed Load and ReLoad, although the material was a lot less consistent than before. There were gems, but dragging out one album idea into 2 left a lot of filler in its wake.

I still think that St. Anger is an underrated album, but that isn't to say it's great either. Sans the bad production, drawn out song length, and lack of solos, this album was as much of a return to form as any old fan could ask for (given that they will NEVER release another Master!). It's not that great of an album but it isn't near as bad as everyone makes it out to be. My thoughts on it are that it was basically similar to Megadeth's and Slayer's comeback albums; they definately had their moments, but overall just weren't that great. I would give their comeback albums about a 75% or 3 stars, whereas most people label them garbage and won't even go above 10% or 1 star.

As somebody stated earlier, Dev should hook up with Newsted again!

Metallica remind of Guns and Roses. When will those hardcore Metalli-fans realise that the band are washed-up has-beens?

Master of Puppets is only a year or so older than Appetite for Destruction and the "Black" album came out around the same time as Use your Illusion so I'd say they were comparable by being way past their best.

That Metallica are still going and Guns and Roses "sort of" aren't, is irrelevant. I just wish the fans of these bands could accept the obivous.

Oh, and on topic, I don't even think a DT production will solve the lazy songwriting, weakening vocals, and outright arrogance that Metallica display. I reckon Dev'd wanna punch 'em after a week.

my thing against metallica is all the drama they seem to have going on so much, i don't think they would have all these arguments if they weren't so rich and successfull from their earlier music. I really think its mainly a byproduct of their success, they need to donate all their money to charity, and get some passion back into writing music again. Doubt if that would really help but who knows.

Say whatever you want about Metallica being lazy old arrogant sellout cash pigs, but they are one of the most influential metal bands ever.
They got me into metal and I think that goes for a lot of people.

I like pretty much every album they made, including Load and Reload, even St Anger to some level. But I think it's about time they either make a really good really metal album again (if they can) or quit.
But I don't see Devin producing them. It'll probably be Rock again, since they see him as a 5th band member.

Agreed. I'd be surprised like a fuck if someone else than Bob Rock produced Metallica's next album. Sure, it's a nice idea to play around with and I found some of the posts so far quite interesting and funny, but at the end of the day, we all know that this is highly unrealistic. They would have to a) come to the decision that they're no longer satisfied with Rock's work, b) offer the job to Devin, who c) would have to accept it. I doubt each of these three points.

Slightly off topic, but really interesting: I remember reading an interview where Dev was asked who he'd want as a producer for his own albums if he had to choose someone else for the job. And the answer was... Bob Rock.

Btw, the guy who did the interview reacted by saying something like "Argh! The antichrist!"

I don't know what's so bad about Bob Rock, he can make great sounds for the albums and it's Metallica who have composed the crappy songs, not Bob.

What comes to Devin producing Metallica - I'd say never. Devin is just much too genious to work with such clowns as Lars Ulrich.

As far as Metallica go for me these days, Fear Factory put it best on Leechmaster:

"I loved you once, now go away! I loved you once, please stay away!"

Not even Devin could save them now.

Sort of off topic: My big question about Metallica is when there are so many better produced, more creative, more technical, more artistic, more aggressive, more beautiful or more fucked up bands out there than Metallica the question must surely be "why bother?"

If I had 10 quid to blow on an album, I'd be completing my Threshold or Meshuggah collections. NOT buying a lame duck like St Anger.

but bob is incharge, that means HE is the one responsible for what is released, plus metallica had no time limit to make the album. if bob would have done the right thing and said "we acctualy have to record this stuff properly and not cut and paste jam sessions" he would be doing the right thing.
