The Cat in the Hat

:o how could I forget.

My mum was the best story reader, she always did different silly voices for all the characters :)

Oh and "Please Mrs Butler"

Roald Dahl books were some of my favorites.

There was also the Harold and the Purple Crayon series by Crockett Johnson.

A Light in the Attic and Where the Sidewalk Ends were two of my favorite poetry books.

I was also huge on informational books on dinosaurs and outer space.

I remember having something with these in it... Image

They were called Furry Eyefuls, but that's really all I remember of it. I liked the Peanuts books. Encyclopedia Brown was always a favorite too.

Later on I liked Wind in the Willows quite a bit, especially the Piper at the Gates of Dawn chapter.

Anyone else out there read the Sideways Stories from Wayside School series? I forgot all about those. It was about a school that was accidently built sideways and was thirty stories tall instead of thirty rooms across. All those crazy adventures those kids would have...and the new kid who was actually a rat under a lot of raincoats...great series of books.

My definate favourite was Monkey King - based on stories written by a chinese monk from hundreds and hundreds of years ago ... I used to be able to tell my mother whenever she missed bits as I knew it so well. It was a huge hardback book that looked ancient even then and if I could ever find one the same not a modern copy I would pay good money to get it (it was originally my elder brother's and he has it now  )

I also loved Stig of the Dump and Grinny which made me scared of old people (was about an evil grandmother who was actually an alien in human form. I used to read a book a day (yes really), go hide somewhere and read from when I got up until when i went to bed. Constantly told off for reading whilst i ate at the table.

Folklore, Myths and Legends of Britain I also used to read continually from about 10 onwards which had lots of interesting snippets that used to keep me entertained on rainy afternoons which was about witches, ghosts and strange happenings.

Childhood n books, now what to begin with. Can't remember too many of them, but I remember reading a lot anyway. Something about an African girl who talked to dolphins, some Jules Verne & H.G. Wells, old school S-F and fantasy (way to go Coma with Mr. Clarke!)... lucky me that I grew up and found cyberpunk!

PS. do you think that kids read enough nowadays? should they read books or go online and get more interactive?

Definately read. You can go online and get interactive later in life and be cool with it. I find that if you don't get turned on to read while young, it can be a long time before someone becomes a reader, if at all. Get the basics down first, then the next level.

I read all the time when I was wee, but now hardly ever. I do think that it gave me a big boost in school and things, so I definately think kids should take the paper route if possible.

I read alot in primary school. I mean a ton. Everything i could get my hands on. I read alot in secondary school, for two reasons. One, i used to just pick anything that souded remotely interesting up and would be finished fast (i'm a fast reader) and 2) i had no friends, so i spent alot of time in the library.

I read less so now, mainly because i am more cynical and a book needs to jump out at me before i read it. The last great book i read by an author that i hadn't read before was The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocolypse by Robert Rankin.

I read a lot as a kid, then stopped when I got to about 13, When I was about 11 I used to devour books, I'd read a Michael Crichton in a weekend. Maybe I just overdid it. I've started reading a bit over the last year, but I have to admit where I have to read for uni, I probably don't do as much as I can.

I have such sentimental value attached to the treasured books of my childhood, it would be really sad if kids didnt have that. And e-books just wouldn't do it for me, there's this tactile element to it too.

Having said that, I think the opportunities kids have with computers are great to..interaction, the opportunity to be creative. There's a little girl who lives next door, she's 9 and she always comes over here. She brought her Dad's laptop a while ago and was showing me all these animations her and her brother had done in powerpoint all on their own (huuuuge files!) but they were so imaginative and creative, I was really impressed.
