Things today are all fast fast fast. Purity of art and the exercise of it is almost lost....We part with the old for something new that we think is good because of advertisement. iPod for example, everyone and their dog has an iPod here in Toronto, HUGE wall covered posters n walls of buildings....That doesn't make it the best product out there, yet people buy it because they think it is.

There's such a huge compromise of integrity.....I can go on and on....Fak.

*Not to start a debate with iPod lovers, just an example. I could have used Nike shoes just as well I suppose.

Though to be fair, vinyl and ipods are not exactly comparable...vinyl could not be used for the purpose that an ipod is and vice versa

I think he just means it is an example of the 'faster is better' attitude we have today. It is definately a good example because every year they bring out a new version...one smaller, with more memory, etc.

That's true...though I do think there is genuine demand for the benefits these sorts of updates offer....I don't think they've got to a point of "perfecting" them yet.....maybe when they do I'll get one

Getting off the topic of vinyl for a moment, and onto digital music, what I'd really find ideal is a mp3 compatible car stereo with a USB input. That way I can mount an external hard drive under the seat and have access to as many somgs as I have space for. Easy to unmount and bring into work or home to update or listen there. I don't spend enough time away from work, home, or car to warrant an portable mp3 player.

well quite some years ago there were projects of a car stereo that played MP3s and used Linux (the bastards didn't want to go through the terrible job of planning the circuits and decided to go for software :D), but i haven't heard about that in like 3 or 4 years.

People were talking about SYL and Toll vinyls, well, there's a problem with that:
they almost certainly were recorded digitally, so there wouldn't be that much difference in the sound, right?

When will that point come...?
iPods or MP3 players like digital cameras are made better, and cheaper with every passing year.

A 12mp camera 3 years ago that went for 8000 dollars is now available for 2000 dollars.
Tomorrow, an 18mp camera will be available for 1500 dollars and a 100 gig mp3 player with the best sound will be available for 100 dollars....

Thus, never ending. Until mp3's CD's, and digital cameras will be obsolete by a new invention.

Yup', that's what I'm wondering too, but the SYL vinyl looks cool in green^^ (I won't play it that much)
BTW, doesn't Devin said in an interview or something that he uses whatever was NOT digital for recording ?
Maybe he canged his mind ?

Some of my friends have CD players in their cars that play MP3s...works quite well! A USB port would be good if you could just stick your memory stick thing into it and play whatever was on it.

You'd have to find an external harddisc that can run on your cars 12V battery supply, or an adaptor that converts the 12V to whatever the harddisc uses (which is +5V and +12V). I'm sure they're out there, you just have to know where to find them.
And hey, I'm still struggling with cassette tapes in the car, how vintage is that!

aren't there MP3 players that you can put in your car's cassette players?

Anyway, damn, i find it pretty hard for Devin to put out a record without using digital, but if he manages to record analog.... DAMN! :D

There are cassette-like devices with a jack-plug. You can plug them into your Discman or MP3 player or whatever, and they convert the signal to something a tape player can play. But you still get the cassette tape sound quality and you'll need extra power for your discman or MP3 player.

I like vinyl becasue I can get old my old rock stuff cheap. Why pay $20 for a Rainbow CD when the vinyl is $5? I have a really crappy record player however so the whole vinyl vs CD thing really doesnt apply to me.

My vinyl collection is close to 100 at the moment, a combination of new releases and classics. I own 600-700 CDs or so just for the ske of comparison. I'm using a Marantz table and a good quality Denon amp both of which I bought secondhand and they sound great. Highly recommended combo.

Long story short on why vinyl sounds better than CD (providing you have a good needle, clean LP, good master and high quality speakers/headphones) is that vinyl captures the entire analogue audio signal as-is. The sound waves are replicated exactly. CDs are digital and only take samples of the analogue signal and thus are imperfect but at the end of the day a lot of factors play a role in how good or bad a record sounds.
